From 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., you can listen to the music of Tim Stambaugh and friends, get a patriotic tattoo, make a festive hat and decorate your bike or wagon in preparation for the big parade. Sometime around 10:45 a.m., judges will announce the winners of the patriotic costume contest and the parade assembly will begin.

The walk down Weaver Street to the Town Commons starts at 11 a.m.

The Village Band, likely playing something by Sousa, will greet the crowds as they arrive. For the rest of the day, the Town Commons will be the scene of sack races, a watermelon seed spitting competition and a pie eating contest. Entertainment ranges from blues and rock-and-roll to Captain’s Jim magic show and a performance by Phyllis Heil, who has won the title of International Whistling Entertainer of the Year multiple times.

There’s a complete schedule and map of Carrboro’s celebration in the center of this month’s issue of MILL, which is inside this week’s newspaper.

Chapel Hill’s celebration of our nation’s declaration that the King of England is no longer in charge centers around the fireworks at Kenan Stadium, which (sadly) are really only visible from inside the stadium or close to it.

Patrons looking for the best seats are encouraged to arrive at Kenan at 7 p.m. Due to ongoing renovations to the stadium, seating is on the north side only (opposite from previous years), with access through Gates 1, 2 and 5. The first 8,000 people to the stadium will receive a free glow necklace from Grace Church.

Recommended parking is at the Craig, Jackson and Cardinal parking decks off Manning Drive. Ram’s Head Parking Deck off Ridge Road will be closed. Disability parking is available along Stadium Drive.

Entertainment before the 9:30 p.m. firework show is courtesy of Juggle Boy, Magic Mike and Paint Savvy and the band Big Sam from Charlotte.

One truth that ought to be self-evident is that the break in the weather couldn’t have been better timed.
Cooler nights and more tolerable days will mark the Fourth of July weekend a welcome change, especially considering the outdoor nature of the holiday.

[2,30

post-11279","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-community","category-top-story
["GET
