It features hundreds of recipes road tested in Carrboro kitchens and ready for fall cooking season.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the only place you can find Beulah Watt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s biscuit technique typed up exactly from her handwritten recipe or Bobbie Stanford\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s tribute to her father: Wimp Andrews\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Cracker Stew \u00e2\u20ac\u201d a hit around the Andrews Riggsbee Tractor Company. Throw in Phil Lloyd\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Baby Back Ribs, the sweet and sour Peppered Cabbage by Shirley Ray, Connie Tart\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Cheesy Potatoes, Eddie Womble\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Come Back Sauce and Cantonese Crunch Casserole, Nina Whitaker Hackney\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Chocolate Angel Pie and hundreds of other Carrboro culinary concoctions, and you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve got more than a cookbook \u00e2\u20ac\u201d you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve got a living history of food around here.<\/p>\n<p>Even Carrboro Fire Chief Travis Crabtree and former UNC system President Bill Friday get into the act. Everyone takes a turn cooking at the firehouse regardless of rank, and Crabtree\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Firehouse Enchiladas, Fire Station Chili and Fire-Rescue Easy Lasagna are three of the entrees featured in the book.<br \/>\nIn his contribution, President Friday takes you through the intricate chemistry of a proper Peanut Brittle.<\/p>\n<p>There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s also a lot of useful information such as how to can vegetables, cooking tips, vegetable and meat cooking tables, how to reduce fat in your diet, a quick summary of herbs and seeds and (sigh) a calorie counter.<\/p>\n<p>The cookbook is, of course, a fundraiser for the club, which was started in May 1945 under the name \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Carrboro Club for Town Improvement and Beautification.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Club member Settle Womble (her Amaretto Slush is on page 132) says the club has seen a resurgence of late thanks to a host of new members, and there are high hopes for this book.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re trying to earn some money so we can give away some money to deserving town projects,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The price is a mere $10. If you find yourself hemming about the cost, note that the book comes with Beulah Hackney\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s $100 Chocolate Cake recipe.
