Homer was born to the late George and Viola Hatley Morrow on October 14, 1941 in Orange County. He attended Chatham County Schools. He later moved to Carrboro, N.C. and was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church.

Homer was well-known throughout the Carrboro and Chapel Hill communities, as well as the UNC campus. Homer loved people. He always kept a smile on his face. Everywhere Homer went, everyone seemed to know him. Walking with him, one repeatedly heard, “Hey, Homer!” Homer was known as the “unofficial” mayor of Carrboro.

He loved playing his guitar and singing. He had a beautiful voice and sang with The Friendly Gospel Singers and traveled with them many places. Homer performed for Club Nova, singing at funerals, memorials, birthdays and other special events, including a wedding on St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans.

He had a favorite hobby. Anyone who knew Homer knows what that was: He loved to wash cars. He washed cars for many people. He even had a slogan: “Your car ain’t been washed until it’s been washed by Homer.” So, if you were one of the lucky ones who got your car washed by Homer, you may have seen your car turning a corner in town or in the country. Guess who’s driving with a big smile on his face? Yep – it was Homer!
Homer was part of the Club Nova community, where he had many friends and was well loved. For more than 20 years, his contributions to Club Nova were immeasurable and made a difference in the lives of many. His long-time friend and colleague, Karen Kincaid Dunn, will miss him immensely. Carrboro will never be the same without Homer. If you knew Homer, your life was enriched.

In his final days, he was surrounded by his extended loving family and his Club Nova family. He leaves to cherish his memories three sisters, Elizabeth Massey-Berry of Pittsboro, N.C. and Hannah Burnette (Homer’s twin sister) and Sally Ann (Roger) Murchinson, both of Durham, N.C., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many wonderful and special friends.

A service will be held at Hickory Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Bethel-Hickory Grove Church Road, Chapel Hill, this Saturday, August 21 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. David L. Massey officiating.

[24

post-12034","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-obituaries
["GET
