For Thursday\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s event, student projects that highlight this year\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s theme \u00e2\u20ac\u201d One People + One World = One Future \u00e2\u20ac\u201d will be on display throughout the school.<\/p>\n<p>The community is invited to both events and guests are asked to wear cultural attire.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>CHHS students in honors orchestra<\/strong><br \/>\nFive Chapel Hill High School students will perform in the North Carolina Honors Orchestra in Winston Salem, November 9-11.<\/p>\n<p>The students selected include: Caitlin Burke, bass; Caitlin Collins, viola; Anna Gage, viola; Haesu Jin, viola; and Will Myers, violin.<\/p>\n<p>The honors orchestra is comprised of 80 North Carolina high school musicians selected by audition.<\/p>\n<p>Myers also won a scholarship in the American String Teacher\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s National Composition Contest for his string piece, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Serenade in E.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Jin was also selected to the National High School Honors Orchestra and will perform in New Mexico in February.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Teacher given grant<\/strong><br \/>\nSmith Middle School science teacher Melinda Fitzgerald was recently awarded a $2,000 Bright Ideas grant from the Piedmont Electric Membership Corporation.<\/p>\n<p>Fitzgerald applied for the grant in order to support the school\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Hydrogen Fuel Cell Project \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a project that Fitzgerald\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s students have been working on for several years.<\/p>\n<p>Piedmont Electric has awarded more than $5.3 million in Bright Ideas Grants since 1994.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Book grant<\/strong><br \/>\nReading is Fundamental, a national children\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s and family literacy organization, announced on Monday the receipt of a $2,754 grant from Macy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s to provide books to Carrboro Elementary students.<\/p>\n<p>RIF gives two to three books to each Carrboro Elementary student every year. The children can choose their own books to take home and keep.<\/p>\n<p>RIF programs across the country provide children in schools, daycare programs, recreation and community centers and libraries with free books and reading-motivation programs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Info for special needs parents<\/strong><br \/>\nChapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools will sponsor \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The ABC\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s of Exceptional Children\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Education Programs\u00e2\u20ac\u009d on November 26 from 6:45-8:30 p.m. at the Carolina Center for Education Excellence at Smith Middle School.<\/p>\n<p>The program is an informational evening for parents of special-needs students that has been designed to improve communication between parents and school administrations.<\/p>\n<p>The program will include an overview of exceptional children\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s programs and classes and a presentation by the Special Needs Advisory Council.<br \/>\nChildcare will be available for children ages 5-11.
