Residents of the community \u00e2\u20ac\u201c led by the Rogers-Eubanks Coalition to End Environmental Racism \u00e2\u20ac\u201c have alleged environmental racism, saying 35 years of a landfill is enough of a burden for one community to bear, and had demanded the search be reopened.<\/p>\n<p>Though it wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t on the board\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Monday night agenda, Chair Moses Carey opened the meeting by saying that he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d had \u00e2\u20ac\u0153a change of heart,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and that while he felt the decision had been made to site the transfer station on Eubanks Road for \u00e2\u20ac\u0153some very good reason, and I still believe those were good reasons at the time,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he now felt otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve had a change of mind about the location of the transfer station on the Eubanks Road site,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Carey said.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--> \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m going to support restarting the search process,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he continued, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153recognizing that it will be well into next year before we resolve this matter again and select another site, if we select another one.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Carey added that he wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t suggesting that the Eubanks Road site should be eliminated from consideration, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153but we do need to decide whether we want to eliminate it for social justice or other reasons.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Commissioner Valerie Foushee said she too was in favor of reopening the search. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I do think that the public is owed a response to the request that was made to us earlier,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said. Commissioners Mike Nelson and Alice Gordon also agreed.
