She has served on the school board since 2003 and will retain her seat.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>By Susan Dickson<br \/>\nStaff Writer<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Newcomer Mia Burroughs and three incumbents were elected to the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Board of Education on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Board Chair Jamezetta Bedford, Mike Kelley and Annetta Streater kept their seats on the board.<br \/>\nBurrroughs garnered the highest number of votes \u00e2\u20ac\u201d about 21.7 percent. Candidate Gary Wallach came in fifth place, trailing Kelley by just over 1 percent with 17.3 percent of the vote.<\/p>\n<p>Longtime board member Liz Carter did not run for re-election.<\/p>\n<p>Burroughs said she was extremely grateful to her supporters and felt \u00e2\u20ac\u0153totally exhilarated and a little numb.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153At this point, I have to change gears,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I need to spend some time learning how to be a good board member.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<br \/>\nBedford said she looked forward to continuing the board\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s work on Professional Learning Communities and improving district math scores.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Throughout the campaign, candidates echoed the importance of Professional Learning Communities \u00e2\u20ac\u201d groups of teachers within schools who meet regularly to discuss the successes and failures of different teaching methods.<br \/>\nBedford added that she thought Burroughs would get acclimated to the board fairly quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Mia is very knowledgeable, having served on [School Governance committees],\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said.<br \/>\nStreater said she was extremely pleased with the support of her constituents, but she was happy that the campaign is over.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s been a busy and full few months,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I want to get a good night\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s rest.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Streater was appointed to the board in 2006 when Ed Sechrest left the board.<\/p>\n<p>Kelley said he felt pretty good about the support he received in the election.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153People were able to evaluate my performance based on their own independent observations,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said. Kelley was the only candidate who did not receive any organized endorsements.<\/p>\n<p>Wallach said that while he was disappointed not to be elected to the board, he enjoyed the campaign and planned to stay involved with the school district.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s been pretty exciting and I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve met a lot of great people,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s been a pretty positive experience.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<br \/>\nBurroughs will be sworn in at the board\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s meeting on December 6.
