The only undisturbed natural area of its kind in Orange County, it hosts a wide variety of plant and animal life along with centuries-old trees.<\/p>\n<p>The North Carolina Botanical Garden is raising money to add 35 undeveloped acres of this special area to an already-preserved 17 acres.<\/p>\n<p>The botanical garden will host a benefit concert at Stillhouse Bottom on Saturday, November 17, 2007 from 6-9 p.m. The Stillhouse Bottom Band, featuring fiddler A.C. Bushnell, will perform.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Please RSVP at 962-0522. A minimum $20 donation is suggested.<\/p>\n<p>Stillhouse Bottom boasts an impressive biodiversity, or variety of flora and fauna.<br \/>\nOver 100 plant species have been identified, and residents include red-tailed and red-shouldered hawks, yellow-billed cuckoo, white-breasted nuthatch, ovenbird and scarlet tanager.<\/p>\n<p>The healthy stream is home to an amphibian community made up of dusky salamanders, two-lined salamanders and green frogs.<\/p>\n<p>And perhaps best of all, within Stillhouse Bottom lies the 5.5-acre Ivey Property that appears to have never been logged, and contains trees thought to be about 300 years old.<\/p>\n<p>The Stillhouse Bottom Nature Preserve is owned by the Botanical Garden Foundation, Inc. and is a dedicated and permanently protected North Carolina Nature Preserve.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00c2\u00a0 Stillhouse Bottom is an ecological singularity.
