But the subsequent winter months may now seem less bleak: The \u00e2\u20ac\u0153locally grown, nationally known\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Carrboro Farmers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Market will open year-round beginning January 5, the first Saturday of 2008. From January until March, the market will be open from 9 a.m. to noon, then resumes regular hours, 7 a.m. to noon, starting March 15.<\/p>\n<p>At a meeting Tuesday, November 20, the board of aldermen authorized the Farmers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Market to use the Town Commons for an additional 88 hours a year (up from 520). The board cited reasons for their approval, including name recognition for the town and better health for its citizens.<br \/>\nThe move had been under discussion by the market and is favored by farmers who can produce goods for the market all year.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--> John Soehner of Eco Farm said the new hours would help farmers earn more money. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s hard to go three or four months without earning a nickel,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I like the idea \u00e2\u20ac\u201c just to make a couple bucks on the weekend.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<br \/>\nHe said that North Carolina\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s climate allows farmers to grow year-round, if they know how. By using greenhouses and tunnelhouses, an unheated version of a greenhouse, farmers can grow greens and other produce later in the year.<\/p>\n<p>Meats, prepared foods and crafts can also be produced in colder months.<\/p>\n<p>Goods found at the market during winter months include collards, mustard greens, turnip greens, sweet potatoes, hydroponic lettuces, Asian greens: tot soi, bok choy and mizuna; chicories, winter squashes, pastured-based meats: beef, buffalo, chicken, goat, lamb, pork; charcuterie: bacon, bratwurst, breakfast sausage, chorizo, country ham, hot dogs, hot and sweet Italian sausage; eggs, fresh and aged cow\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s milk cheeses, pecans, pickles, jams, jellies, honey, wine, prepared foods and crafts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Jack Carley Staff Writer The Farmers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Market will come to a close right before Christmas this year, as usual.
