
{"id":14024,"date":"2010-11-18T15:57:52","date_gmt":"2010-11-18T20:57:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carrborocitizen.com\/main\/?p=14024"},"modified":"2010-11-18T16:37:44","modified_gmt":"2010-11-18T21:37:44","slug":"growing-younger-through-the-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/2010\/11\/18\/growing-younger-through-the-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Growing younger through the years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>RECENTLY . . . <\/p>\n<p>By Valarie Schwartz<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nThere\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s so much to do every day, so many details eating away the hours, that if there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s no dog that needs to be walked or we didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t begin an exercise routine early in our lives, we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re tempted to ignore the fact that our bodies need more than food. <\/p>\n<p>Joyce Biggers learned the perils of that ignorance four years ago, when she discovered she could not pick herself up from the floor after sitting down to pick up some fallen magazines. At a friend\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s suggestion, she began to train with Matt Golden, owner of Personalized Fitness on West Main Street in Carrboro. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Mom started working with Matt as a 70th birthday present to herself,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said her daughter, Missy Biggers. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153She insisted that I work out too.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/p>\n<p>It had been close to a decade since I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d last seen Joyce, after the sudden death of her husband, Dr. Paul Biggers. When I walked into Golden\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s studio, the former teacher looked younger than I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d ever seen her \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the result of losing 45 pounds and creating muscle with three workouts a week. Missy was there, and while Joyce worked with Golden, we talked.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve had Type 1 diabetes since I was 5 and Mom has had Type 2 for 20 years,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Missy said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The impact that working out\/resistance training has had on diabetes management for both of us is dramatic.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/p>\n<p>She said that each workout reduces blood-sugar levels for at least 24 hours, so she doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have to inject insulin and Joyce doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t need medication. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Any time you can reduce blood-sugar levels to normal range without taking or making more insulin, your body benefits <em>greatly<\/em>.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Golden works with one client at a time and tailors each session to help clients achieve personal goals. Currently, his clients range in age from 15 to 82, but he has worked with children as young as 12 and adults to age 91. He grew up in Rochester, N.Y., and discovered Carrboro after his parents retired to Southern Village. Besides a short stint playing soccer while in grade school, Golden, 33, never got involved in organized sports, though he enjoyed exercise and studied kinesiology science in college. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Friends saw my success with exercise and approached me to help them develop routines for them,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said. He did it first for fun, and then people started offering him money to devise routines. Five years ago, he took it to the next level and became certified through the American Council on Exercise. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153If it weren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t for Matt, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d probably still be sitting on the couch watching TV right now,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Joyce said. <\/p>\n<p>Instead, she was the center of attention as her son, Bill, dropped in to lend encouragement, followed later by her daughter, Joy, in town from Mebane.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153What\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Granny\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s two favorite things?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Bill asked as he was leaving.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Hugs and kisses,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Joyce answered, as she went to him for both. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Becoming powerful in your body and successfully completing a workout grounds your mind and body,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Missy said. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153It does a lot for self-esteem,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Golden said.
