But a recently set-up Town of Carrboro page on the popular social networking platform got a thumbs down from the town’s attorney, who said the town should protect itself from people using its official logos on unofficial sites.

So at its meeting Tuesday night at Town Hall, the board of aldermen approved a plan to trademark the town seal and those of its fire and police department.

Once that’s done, future requests for use of the trademark would be channeled to Town Manager Steve Stewart for review. No word yet on whether an official Facebook Page is in the works.

Also on Tuesday night, the board of aldermen approved a request by residents near Baldwin Park for town support of a community garden at the park.

Rickie White, a Lloyd Street resident, said the hope is that the garden can help bring the neighborhoods around the park closer together and bridge the gap between its longtime residents and those who have moved in over the past several years.

The garden would be roughly 70 by 50 feet with a rainwater cistern for rainwater and a picnic shelter. In all, 20 4-by-8-foot beds surrounded by deer fencing would be available.

Board member Randee Haven-O’Donnell said the park is a great place to bring people together. “We hope that we will help knit the neighborhood through this project,” she said.

The board’s action cleared the way for the Carrboro Parks Project to begin raising contributions for the project.

In other action, the board heard a favorable report on the town’s financial condition during a review of the annual audit report for the past fiscal year, which ended June 30.

Mayor Mark Chilton said Wednesday that while the report shows a strong reserve thanks to cost savings over the past several years, he expects the next budget season will be just as tough as the past few.

“Compared to a lot of municipalities, we’re in good shape,” Chilton said.
