Born <st1:date year=\"1914\" day=\"28\" month=\"1\">Jan. 28, 1914<\/st1:date> in <st1:place><st1:city>Brownhelm<\/st1:city>,  <st1:state>OH<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> to Hayes and Elsie (Cooper) Whittlesey, she always valued her father\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s humanism and her mother\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s efficiency. Helping her father on their farm, she developed a respect and a capacity for physical labor. As a teen she was her church\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s pianist and played for her high school basketball team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Lucy majored in music at Bowling Green State College, and met her future husband, Joseph, when schedule conflicts resulted in both regularly arriving late to a class. After graduation she taught school music for four years before marrying Joe, who took a position at the <st1:place><st1:placetype>University<\/st1:placetype>  of <st1:placename>Toledo<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>. Two sons were born in <st1:city><st1:place>Toledo<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">When Joe was hired by UNC in 1944, the young family moved to <st1:place>Chapel Hill<\/st1:place>. After a daughter was born, they moved to their lifelong house on <st1:street><st1:address>Davie Circle<\/st1:address><\/st1:street>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In the \u00e2\u20ac\u02dc50\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Lucy raised her three children and taught piano. She was a founding member of the Community Church of Chapel Hill. During the family\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s year in <st1:country-region><st1:place>Italy<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> (\u00e2\u20ac\u02dc56-\u00e2\u20ac\u212257), she managed the relative lack of amenities and language difficulties with diligence and humor. In the \u00e2\u20ac\u02dc60\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s she taught school and spent two summers with Joe in <st1:country-region><st1:place>India<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>. She was involved with the civil rights movement and the Women\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s International League of Peace and Freedom; she was a stalwart at peace demonstrations. Lucy endured several health challenges; as therapy for a stroke she wrote a biography of her early years. Under her unassuming exterior she remained independent and tenacious. She was respected for her gentleness, loyalty, and concern for others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Lucy was predeceased by Joe, her husband of 66 years; sister, Ruth Hite; and nephew, Clayton Hite. She is survived by her sons and their wives (Joseph P. and Susan, David and Yvonne) and her daughter, Lesley, and her partner, Charlotte Stetson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A memorial service will be held <st1:time minute=\"0\" hour=\"14\">2:00 p.m.<\/st1:time> <st1:date year=\"2007\" day=\"28\" month=\"4\">April  28, 2007<\/st1:date> at the Community Church of Chapel Hill.
