But there are simple things homeowners and renters can do to protect their homes, according to the Carrboro Police Department.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The main thing that I would stress, if you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re going to be away \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 is to keep your house looking like it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s lived in,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Paul Atherton, community services officer with the Carrboro Police. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153You don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want to give the impression that it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s an empty house.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Put lights on timers and make sure mail, packages and newspapers are collected, he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153A lot of people tend to hide a key somewhere outside,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Atherton said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t recommend that.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Instead, leave a key with a trusted neighbor and ask the same neighbor to pick up your mail and newspapers. Even if mail and newspaper service can be stopped, make sure someone checks for packages, Atherton said.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153If someone sent you something and you don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s coming, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s really hard to call FedEx and say stop delivering to my house,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a good idea, whether you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re on vacation or not, to keep your curtains closed,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Atherton said. A Christmas tree with a pile of presents under it \u00e2\u20ac\u0153makes your house more attractive for a burglar.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Both renters and homeowners should have insurance on the items inside their homes, he added. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t think that your apartment complex or landlord is going to pay for anything stolen.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Atherton also recommends having someone check doors and windows regularly to make sure they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re secure.
