Historic debate at Century Center"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>By Kirk Ross<\/strong><br \/>\nStaff Writer<\/em><\/p>\n<p>They\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re promising an old-fashioned political debate in the spirit of the famed Lincoln-Douglas matches. But for Al McSurley, John Heuer and other members of the local Coalition for the Constitution, which is sponsoring the event scheduled for next Tuesday at the Century Center, the stakes are somewhat higher than who will be the next senator from Illinois.<\/p>\n<p>The title of this one is \u00e2\u20ac\u0153On the Question of Impeachment,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and in addition to the all-American bunting Heuer and McSurely plan to hang a banner reminding those gathered that they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re sitting in the cradle of impeachment.<br \/>\nThe \u00e2\u20ac\u0153convenor\u00e2\u20ac\u009d for this debate is County Commissioner Moses Carey and moderating will be professor Hodding Carter III. While an elected dignitary and a professor may seem about right in their roles, the actual debaters might surprise you a bit. Arguing for impeachment is Republican Bruce Fein, a former justice department lawyer who was research director for the congressional inquiry into the Iran-Contra scandal and recently served on the American Bar Association\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s task force on presidential signing statements.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Arguing against impeachment is liberal journalist Michael Tomasky, who writes for New York magazine and is the author of Left for Dead, a study of the intellectual collapse of the American Left.<\/p>\n<p>Both men say they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re looking forward to the discussion.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent interview with The Citizen, Fein said that he will argue that the president and vice president have so distorted the powers of their office that they must be challenged. The theory the Executive Branch is working on post-9-11, he said, contends \u00e2\u20ac\u0153all the planet is a battlefield in and outside the U.S.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Bush, Fein said, has created in terms of national policy \u00e2\u20ac\u0153a state of nature with war of all against all.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, he said, the administration\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s obsession with secrecy, Bush\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s signing statements that indicate he can interpret laws and choose to not obey them and politically motivated vendettas like the mass firing of federal prosecutors necessitate action.<\/p>\n<p>Tomasky, in the midst of reporting on the New Hampshire primary when he spoke with The Citizen, said he does not expect to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153dissent from a syllable\u00e2\u20ac\u009d of what Fein will charge has been done.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153On the merits, this bunch has probably done a number of impeachable things,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said. But there are the merits and there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the political reality.<\/p>\n<p>Barring new charges, developments or information, impeachment is \u00e2\u20ac\u0153politically impossible,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Tomasky said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s going to be impossible to get enough votes in the Senate.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Knowing that, moving forward on impeachment doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t make sense and risks creating a backlash that could alienate some people at a time when there is a real opportunity to build a progressive majority.<\/p>\n<p>Though he doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t agree it would be, Tomasky said there would be voters \u00e2\u20ac\u0153turned off by what they see as an overly partisan maneuver.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>The two sides square off at 7 p.m. sharp.
