
{"id":1685,"date":"2008-01-18T07:58:51","date_gmt":"2008-01-18T15:58:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carrborocitizen.com\/main\/2008\/01\/18\/hillsborough-farmers-market-plan-delayed\/"},"modified":"2008-01-18T07:58:51","modified_gmt":"2008-01-18T15:58:51","slug":"hillsborough-farmers-market-plan-delayed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/2008\/01\/18\/hillsborough-farmers-market-plan-delayed\/","title":{"rendered":"Hillsborough farmer&#8217;s market plan delayed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Susan Dickson<br \/>\nStaff Writer<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday postponed a decision regarding who would administer the farmers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 market at the county\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s new Public Market House, set to open in Hillsborough in March.<br \/>\nCommissioners expressed aversion at being forced to choose between two groups, and prior to public comment Chair Barry Jacobs asked individuals to refrain from name-calling and personal attacks.<br \/>\nIn August, two opposing groups appealed to the board for control of the Hillsborough Farmers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Market. Jeffry Goodrum, speaking on behalf of 13 vendors, asked commissioners to recognize his group as the official Hillsborough Farmers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Market board of directors. Beverly Blythe, the market\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s founder and co-manager, said most vendors opposed the takeover by the group. <!--more--><br \/>\nTuesday\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s meeting was standing-room-only, with the two groups filling opposite sides of the F. Gordon Battle Courtroom.<br \/>\nOver the past several months, the county attempted to mediate between the two groups in order to form one board of directors to run the market at the Public Market House, but efforts were unsuccessful.<br \/>\nLast week, Goodrum\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s group announced that they had officially incorporated as the Farmers of Orange and would run a farmers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 market, regardless of whether they were able to use the county\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s space.<br \/>\nThe county\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s new Public Market House is located behind the county sheriff\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s office on East Margaret Lane in Hillsborough. The Hillsborough Farmers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Market has previously been held in the SunTrust Bank parking lot in downtown Hillsborough.<br \/>\nFollowing the mediation efforts, County Manager Laura Blackmon recommended that the county operate the market and hire a manager outside of the market\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s vendors, so that they did not have to choose between the two groups.<br \/>\nHowever, several commissioners said they were hesitant about the county operating the market, citing concerns about spending tax dollars to fund management or mediating vendor disagreements.<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153This board never intended to have any operating interest in this facility other than to make it available to the community,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Jacobs said.<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153This has been a sad spectacle,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he continued. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s been a notable lack of charity.<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153As someone who\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s been going [to the market] for years \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 I hate what I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve heard and seen over the last few months.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<br \/>\nCommissioner Moses Carey said he did not support the county operating the market. However, he added: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We may be forced to do something we don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want to do.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<br \/>\nCarey said that if necessary, the county could manage the market temporarily so that vendors could begin selling on March 1, as previously planned.<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Just about everybody I talked to, when I questioned them [about the market], they had a vision of vibrancy for the market,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s hard to understand how people can be divided when they really want the same thing.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<br \/>\nSeveral vendors spoke in support of Blythe, citing her efforts to build the market.<br \/>\nBlythe asked that the commissioners \u00e2\u20ac\u0153not add another level of bureaucracy\u00e2\u20ac\u009d by managing the market through the county.<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The vendors and citizens have waited so long [for the market house] and we just can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t believe that the day is here,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Blythe said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We are ready to move forward.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<br \/>\nThe commissioners said they will make a decision regarding who will administer the farmers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 market at the Public Market House on Feb. 5. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Susan Dickson Staff Writer The Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday postponed a decision regarding who would administer the farmers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 market at the county\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s new Public Market House, set to open in Hillsborough in March.
