
{"id":1737,"date":"2008-01-30T13:40:26","date_gmt":"2008-01-30T21:40:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carrborocitizen.com\/main\/2008\/01\/30\/local-woman-joins-peace-corps\/"},"modified":"2008-01-30T13:40:26","modified_gmt":"2008-01-30T21:40:26","slug":"local-woman-joins-peace-corps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/2008\/01\/30\/local-woman-joins-peace-corps\/","title":{"rendered":"Local woman joins Peace Corps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Laura McIver Boggess, 25, of Carrboro, N.C. has been accepted into the Peace Corps.<\/p>\n<p>Boggess departed for Guatemala on Jan. 9 to begin pre-service training as an environmental education Peace Corps Volunteer.<\/p>\n<p>After graduation in April, Boggess will work with rural schools to integrate conservation and environmental awareness into the curriculum. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>She attended the UNC, where she earned a bachelor\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s degree in biology, graduating in 2006.<br \/>\nBoggess previously worked for a conservation non-governmental organization in Borneo, N.C.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I had a lot of support from friends, some who had been Volunteers themselves. My father was a Peace Corps Volunteer in India,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Boggess. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Hearing all of their experiences has always been inspiring to me.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>During the first three months of her service, Boggess will live with a host family in Guatemala to become fully immersed in the country\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s language and culture.
