This is the largest cut in education funding in North Carolina history. Any attempt to say otherwise or to couch their “right-sizing” as reform hides the facts. The budget released today fires thousands of teachers and teacher assistants and damages the ability of young people to learn and succeed. Shutting down Smart Start and reducing funding for More at Four leaves behind thousands of children who need our help. Services and programs for academically gifted students will be cut. Worker training at our community colleges will be diminished. Our universities will still lose thousands of employees and class sections. This is not reform. This is a leap backwards for North Carolina, all done while denying 42,000 people the unemployment benefits they have earned. We sincerely hope that negotiations with the governor will produce a much better plan for the future of our state.
Rep. Joe Hackney
Minority Leader
Rep.
