
{"id":1932,"date":"2008-02-21T08:49:25","date_gmt":"2008-02-21T16:49:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carrborocitizen.com\/main\/2008\/02\/21\/get-your-tickets-for-the-community-dinner\/"},"modified":"2008-02-25T08:40:51","modified_gmt":"2008-02-25T16:40:51","slug":"get-your-tickets-for-the-community-dinner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/2008\/02\/21\/get-your-tickets-for-the-community-dinner\/","title":{"rendered":"Get your tickets for the Community Dinner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Susan Dickson<\/strong><br \/>\nStaff Writer<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On March 2, nearly 600 people from Orange County are expected to gather for the 11th annual Community Dinner. <\/p>\n<p>The event \u00e2\u20ac\u201c which was started in 1998 as a celebration of Black History Month \u00e2\u20ac\u201c draws county residents young and old, black and white and rich and poor. <\/p>\n<p><!--more-->\u00e2\u20ac\u0153What we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re hoping to do is really to eradicate the lines in the sand that divide our community,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Nerys Levy, one of the founders of the event and chair of the Community Dinner Committee. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s an inclusive event across the board.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/p>\n<p>Levy started the event with the help of the Carrboro Branch Library, the Cultural Arts Group and Mildred Council. <\/p>\n<p>Council \u00e2\u20ac\u201c more commonly known as Mama Dip \u00e2\u20ac\u201c has always prepared the main dishes for the event. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Over the past few years, we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve incorporated more main-dish cooks,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Community Dinner Committee member Jackie Helvey. <\/p>\n<p>This year, main courses will be provided by Mama Dip\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s, Bon\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Home Cookin\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, the Carolina Inn, Tandoor Indian and Bandidos. <\/p>\n<p>Side dishes will feature the flavors of more than 20 local restaurants, churches and chefs, including Lantern, Jade Palace, Bonne Soiree, Margaret\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Cantina and Crawdaddy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s. All food is donated, and this year the dinner will feature food prepared using ingredients produced by local farmers. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153What [the founders] were trying to do is show the diversity in our community,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Helvey said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The other idea was to maybe introduce people to food that they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d never tasted before.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/p>\n<p>In addition, Levy said the committee tries to arrange a diverse group of performers for the dinner. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We try to represent different ethnic groups. If they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re not on the stage, they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re on the table,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Levy said. <\/p>\n<p>The community dinner also provides tickets for those who are unable to purchase them, using county funding and donations from businesses and individuals, Helvey said, in order to make the event as inclusive as possible. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Nobody knows who paid for their ticket and who didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said. <\/p>\n<p>If there are leftovers, they will be donated to the Inter-Faith Council. <\/p>\n<p>Helvey added that the committee encourages people to sit down at the dinner with people they don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153People get to come and meet people who they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve never met before,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Levy said. <\/p>\n<p>Over the years, the event has drawn attention from groups in other counties; this year, Durham will have its own community dinner.<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The dinner has been used as a model in different places,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Levy said. <\/p>\n<p>Tickets are $8 for adults and $3 for kids and are on sale at the following locations: the Carrboro Branch Library at McDougle School, the Ink Spot, the Chapel Hill Museum Shop, the Chapel Hill News, Mama Dip\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Kitchen, the Preservation Society of Chapel Hill, Market Street Books at Southern Village, Townsend, Bertram and Co., Bon\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Home Cookin\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and the Hillsborough Chamber of Commerce. <\/p>\n<p>Levy said she expects the tickets to sell out before the event, so those who want to go should get their tickets early. <\/p>\n<p>To donate or to volunteer at the event, contact Levy at rilevy@mindspring.com.
