This week, we profile the Club Nova Thrift Shop, located at 103C W. Main St.<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nLocal thrift shoppers are privy to two stores within one block in downtown Carrboro \u00e2\u20ac\u201c though some people don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know it. <\/p>\n<p>A few doors down from the PTA Thrift Shop, Club Nova Thrift Shop is a small store full of big surprises. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153When we first opened, people thought we were a nightclub,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Mahlon Williams, Club Nova rehabilitation therapist specialist. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m a former police officer, and when I heard Club Nova was opening up, I said, \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcOh no, another club! I hope we don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have to shut them down.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153But it turned out to be Club Nova, and it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s great.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re considering changing our name to reflect that we are selective with our merchandise,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Christy Thompson, Club Nova\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s associate director of programming. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Some clubs have art galleries to support their mission, some have thrift shops. We get really high-end items here, so ours is more like a boutique.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where your dollars go<br \/>\n<\/strong>Club Nova is devoted to providing a place for individuals living with mental illness. The thrift shop provides work for members and revenues that support the club\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s other programs. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Because our members are here all of the time, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s easy to see where the money goes. Everyone is very personable; you get a good feeling being a part of it,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Williams said.<\/p>\n<p>Members help with the thrift shop\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s display, accounting, customer service and marketing.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re becoming very selective about the merchandise we put out. The better this place looks, the better it is for our members and for people\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s image of mental health issues,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Thompson said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153And as our profits go up from selling more, getting the word out about what we do, making our shop as attractive and full of beautiful items as possible, we help our members more as well.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>The club\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s mission helps draw in great donations, Thompson added. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We get all of the big brands,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153People have a choice where they want to donate and they are very generous with us.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/p>\n<p><strong>Something special for almost nothing<br \/>\n<\/strong>Regulars come in to Club Nova daily, keeping an eye out for precious objects. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Whenever we have furniture \u00e2\u20ac\u201c tables and chairs and small pieces \u00e2\u20ac\u201c they go in a day or two,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Thompson said. <\/p>\n<p>Donations sometimes include collectible items as well. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153At the bottom of a bag of mostly unsellable clothing were a stamp collection and these two coins,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Thompson said, displaying two rare coins. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153One is a 1943-D steel war penny, the other is a 1 cent piece from 1851.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/p>\n<p>A regular in the shop, a Frenchman named Francois, showed Thompson a book about rare coins for the staff to thumb through. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m also checking on eBay and am meeting with specialists to learn more,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Thompson said.<\/p>\n<p>The store\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s unique offerings and mission have drawn in a number of regular shoppers. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153He comes in twice a day,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Thompson said of Francois. He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not the only one. Local thrift shops are warm, friendly places.
