
{"id":20497,"date":"2011-08-25T12:00:40","date_gmt":"2011-08-25T16:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carrborocitizen.com\/main\/?p=20497"},"modified":"2011-08-25T12:00:43","modified_gmt":"2011-08-25T16:00:43","slug":"schools-open-a-bit-more-crowded-than-anticipated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/2011\/08\/25\/schools-open-a-bit-more-crowded-than-anticipated\/","title":{"rendered":"Schools open a bit more crowded than anticipated"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Susan Dickson<br \/>\n<em>Staff Writer<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nAcross Carrboro and Chapel Hill, nearly 12,000 students will strap on their backpacks and kiss summer goodbye, heading back today for the start of the 2011-12 school year. <\/p>\n<p>All summer long, district staff has been busy making improvements to schools, hiring new staff and preparing for the arrival of the students \u00e2\u20ac\u201c of which there are significantly more than anticipated by administrators. According to Todd LoFrese, assistant superintendent for support services with Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, staff had anticipated about 11,700 students this school year \u00e2\u20ac\u201c but as of Tuesday, enrollment was approaching 12,000. As of Tuesday, 114 new teachers and other staff had been hired. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The student enrollment being higher than we expected, that is causing us to have to make some August hires that we weren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t originally planning for, because all of those kids need a teacher,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Though the facilities might be a bit crowded, students are returning to improved schools. Photo by Robin Nucilli<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nIn addition, more than 120 school bathrooms were renovated and the CHHS gym got a major facelift, with a new floor, lighting and bleachers. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153One of the neat things with that project was how we reused and recycled the materials,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d LoFrese said, noting that the wood from the old bleachers will be used in CHHS\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 wood shop and materials from the old gym floor will be given to Habitat for Humanity for installation in homes. <\/p>\n<p>Glenwood Elementary School has a new mobile classroom, which will help ease school crowding, while McDougle Elementary\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s mobile classroom saw renovations this summer. <\/p>\n<p>Carrboro Elementary School Principal Emily Bivins said the renovations to the school\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s bathrooms were much appreciated. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153It was pretty exciting for us because we have an older building,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said. <\/p>\n<p>Bivins said teachers were busy preparing their classrooms this week for the arrival of students.
