Photo by Isaac Sandlin.\" align=\"left\" height=\"110\" width=\"166\" \/><\/a><em><strong>By Susie Dickson<\/strong><br \/>\nStaff Writer<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The atmosphere was more celebratory than tearful as thousands of students, faculty and Carolina community members came together on Tuesday to honor and say a final goodbye to UNC Student Body President Eve Carson.<\/p>\n<p>Carson, an Athens, Ga. native who came to UNC as a Morehead-Cain scholar, was shot and killed in a robbery during the early morning hours of March 5. Two suspects \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Demario James Atwater, 21, and Lawrence Alvin Lovette Jr., 17 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c have been arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Police apprehended Atwater and Lovette last week after releasing photos of the suspects using Carson\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s ATM card and driving what appeared to be her 2005 Toyota Highlander.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, people clad in Carolina blue streamed into the Dean Dome to say goodbye to their beloved friend, leader, colleague and family member. Many leaned on one another for support, but smiled as they watched a slide show and heard stories about Carson.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.carrborocitizen.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/memorial001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.carrborocitizen.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/memorial001.jpg\" alt=\"Chancellor Moeser charged the university to live up to Carson\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s image of Carolina. Photo by Isaac Sandlin.\" height=\"156\" width=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Today, we are still in mourning, but we want to celebrate this special person that we knew and love,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Chancellor James Moeser said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We honor Eve by being the university that she loved when she talked about the \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcCarolina Way.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Friends of Carson shared anecdotes and memories, and both laughter and tears echoed throughout the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153She was awesome, no doubt,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Aaron Charlop-Powers, Carson\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s former roommate. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I stand here before you, not because of a title, or work done abroad, but as a friend who misses her because of her imperfections.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153She was a terrible driver,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he added. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Her plans changed with the wind.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Charlop-Powers recalled Carson\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s constant tardiness and propensity toward leaving just one bite of his ice cream in the freezer, but also her care for everyone around her.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Her care for us, for you and me, continues,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I want to tell her not to worry; to stay concerned, but not to worry.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Tim Reilly, Carson\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s boyfriend of three years, spoke of Carson\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s thirst for adventure and excitement.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Adventure is a life well lived. It is life as Eve lived it,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Like Eve, let us have the courage to choose to be excellent \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 with a heart.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Nearly everyone who spoke at the memorial mentioned Carson\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s drive to better the university and the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Maybe what we need to do is just work a little bit harder \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 to make up for what she would\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve done,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Erskine Bowles, president of the UNC system.<\/p>\n<p>Lovette has also been charged with first-degree murder and robbery in connection with the January slaying of Duke University grad student Abhijit Mahato. Because he is only 17, he is not eligible for the death penalty.<\/p>\n<p>Two days before Carson was killed, Atwater showed up to court for a probation violation hearing, but the hearing never happened because of a paperwork error, according to the state Division of Community Corrections.
