We would like to share our experience in advocating to change a dangerous intersection.

As UNC medical students, we have been concerned about the safety of a crosswalk on Manning Drive on UNC’s medical campus. We decided to address the issue by trying to get a traffic light installed at the crosswalk. We began by contacting various town, university and medical school officials, and eventually learned that existing plans call for a pedestrian bridge with construction of the new Dental Sciences Building beginning this summer. While our specific concern was effectively addressed, we wish to encourage and empower all citizens to be active participants in campus safety improvements by contacting the relevant campus and town authorities when specific safety issues concern them.

For issues occurring off campus, we suggest contacting Chapel Hill’s traffic engineer, Kumar Neppalli (969-5093). For campus issues, Ray Magyar of UNC Public Safety is an excellent resource (962-5028). Students may want to consider filling out the online form at www.dps.unc.edu, www.dps.unc.edu (click on contact information and then webmaster contact) or by calling the pedestrian hotline (843-PEDS) to report a concern. Additionally, students can get involved in activities such as signing a petition and participating in awareness campaigns.

Evan Corey
Chapel Hill

The recent and tragic deaths of Basil and Kaled Shahin in Raleigh highlight the importance of pedestrian safety.
