Photo by Kirk Ross.\" align=\"left\" height=\"120\" width=\"160\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>by Susan Dickson<br \/>\nStaff Writer<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The 13th annual Carrboro Day will feature activities and events both new and old, focusing on a new theme this year: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Celebrating a Sustainable Community.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Catherine DeVine, director of Carrboro Day, said that while the event will include new features and activities, much of the May 4 festival will be reminiscent of those of years past.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s why we love it,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said DeVine. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s like an old movie \u00e2\u20ac\u201c out of time.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->This year\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Carrboro Day will be slightly different, however, because it will be trash free, DeVine said.<\/p>\n<p>The Boy Scouts will sell hot dogs and other food at the event as a benefit for the Carrboro Branch Library, but the food will be wrapped in paper, rather than non-recyclable materials. Material-specific recycling bins will be scattered throughout the venues.<\/p>\n<p>Another addition to Carrboro Day, which is run by volunteers, is a new volunteer squad \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the Carrboro High School football team.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve got the Carrboro High Jaguars, wearing their purple jerseys, volunteering all over the place all afternoon,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d DeVine said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153They\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll do everything.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>DeVine said the main stage in front of Carrboro Town Hall is \u00e2\u20ac\u0153booked solid with live music,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d but participants can enjoy other displays and activities throughout the festival as well.<\/p>\n<p>There will be a variety of family games, including relay races and a balloon toss. In addition, Mother Goose will make a special appearance and magician Joshua Lozoff will perform. Kids can also make crafts on the Town Commons.<\/p>\n<p>Several town departments and organizations, including the Carrboro Fire Department, the Orange Water and Sewer Authority and Public Works, will have informational displays.<\/p>\n<p>Behind Town Hall, the Animal Protection Society Drill Team \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a group of trained dogs \u00e2\u20ac\u201c will perform a choreographed maneuver.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153They show off,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d DeVine said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153They\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re very well-trained dogs who know how to march.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Inside Town Hall, local poets will give a poetry reading, and a special ceremony will recognize the winners of this year\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s youth poetry contest.<\/p>\n<p>Although DeVine said she hopes for clear skies, Carrboro Day will go on regardless of gloomy weather.
