
{"id":2460,"date":"2008-05-01T06:20:43","date_gmt":"2008-05-01T14:20:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carrborocitizen.com\/main\/2008\/05\/01\/land-trust-joins-the-green-home-tour\/"},"modified":"2008-05-01T06:20:43","modified_gmt":"2008-05-01T14:20:43","slug":"land-trust-joins-the-green-home-tour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/2008\/05\/01\/land-trust-joins-the-green-home-tour\/","title":{"rendered":"Land Trust joins the Green Home Tour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>by Emily Burns<\/strong><br \/>\nStaff Writer<\/em><br \/>\nThe Orange Community Housing and Land Trust\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s first certified green home will be featured in the Home Builders Association\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s 3rd Annual Green Home Tour this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The house, located at 104 Broad St. in Carrboro, boasts many green features, including a sealed crawl space, roofing made with recycled materials, EnergyStar appliances and energy-efficient bath fans, among others.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The green features of the home, its small size and its location will allow future owners to save money and to minimize their carbon footprints. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153What I think is unique about this house among others on the tour is actually the in-town location,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Land Trust project manager Christine Westfall said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153There are very few homes on the tour that are actually in walkable communities where you don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have to drive to services.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/p>\n<p>As part of the Advanced Energy Corporation\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s SystemVision Energy Guarantee Program, owners of the home will be guaranteed average heating and cooling costs of $30 per month during their first year of residence.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We also used materials that are going to wear well over time,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Westfall said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153This house on Broad Street has oak floors for instance, rather than carpet.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Westfall said that use of durable and environmentally friendly materials will reduce maintenance expenses for the owner and minimize the home\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s long-term impact on the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Construction of the roughly 1,500-square-foot home began early this year and is slated to be complete on May 15.  <\/p>\n<p>According to Land Trust Executive Director Robert Dowling, building the home cost approximately $220,000, but with a local subsidy of $80,000, the Land Trust initially will list the home at approximately $150,000. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll subsidize it based on the needs of the buyer down to $125,000,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Dowling said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153This is probably one of the most affordable houses on the tour.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Emily Burns Staff Writer The Orange Community Housing and Land Trust\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s first certified green home will be featured in the Home Builders Association\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s 3rd Annual Green Home Tour this weekend.
