An outgrowth of my Chinese Community Journalism initiative, the historic exchange between fledgling journalists from UNC and Southwest University of Political Science and Law in Chongqing put kids who are worlds apart face to face in real time. Chapel Hill native and UNC senior (and Citizen intern) Kevin Collins reflected, “I’m so glad I could be a part of the China Skype session! Every now and then, something happens that reminds me what a crazy time I’m growing up in. That was pretty much all I could think about during the Skype session. Technology is bringing the world together, and I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a more concrete example of that than last night.” In response, Chinese student Ying Peng observed, “On the screen, we saw … American students … with golden hair and white skin, some with brown hair and black skin. I could … perceive the racial differences, so that this meeting seemed more unique and valuable. When the first girl (explained why she loved) journalism, she said: I love (meeting) different people … so that I can tell (their stories.) I bet this is also one of the reasons why I chose journalism. It seems that we have overcome the different time zones and the different races between us.” Forgive me for being so hopeful in this fractured world, but perhaps the childhood song is true: “It’s a Small World After All.”

A THOUSAND WORDS
Do you have an important old photo that you value?
