There have been no reports of people drinking from the bags, but some may have been \u00e2\u20ac\u0153huffing\u00e2\u20ac\u009d from them. <\/p>\n<p>Further investigation revealed more of the same.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nNo wonder \u00e2\u20ac\u201d the classic brown paper bags have been streaming from Neal\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Deli, where the surge is not for the bags, but the real deal inside \u00e2\u20ac\u201d delicatessen sandwiches \u00e2\u20ac\u201d and the bodacious aromas they provide.<br \/>\nThe deli-done-right duo of Matt and Sheila Neal have been talking about how to venture forth culinary-wise during much of their 10-year relationship. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Sheila was looking at doing something hospitality- and food-oriented,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Matt, son of Moreton and Bill Neal, who together opened La Residence in the 1980s, while Bill later opened Crook\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Corner, two iconic Chapel Hill restaurants. <\/p>\n<p>Matt and Sheila opened Neal\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Deli on April 4. <\/p>\n<p>A deli, you may ask?<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153That was Matt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s idea,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Sheila said. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153It seemed like a good fit for a neighborhood town,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Matt said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153And there was no deli in town.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s simple food done well,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Sheila added. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153But it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s more deli than sandwich shop.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Walk in \u00e2\u20ac\u201d or simply drive past \u00e2\u20ac\u201d on a day when they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re smoking pastrami and you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll not only know it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a deli, you may also be transcended back to your first delicatessen experience. If the aroma sends you \u00e2\u20ac\u201d wait until that first bite (especially of the Manhattan). Then you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll understand the gaze on the faces of the brown-baggers looking for a place to sit down and dive in. <\/p>\n<p>Some folks forego the bag altogether and stay at Neal\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s, where there are three tables inside and a counter outside. <\/p>\n<p>On market days, the atmosphere is like a family kitchen. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re headed over to Neal\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Cathy Jones announced at noon-sharp the first Saturday that Neal\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s was open, as she slammed shut the back of her Perry-winkle Farms truck and headed over with her husband, Mike Perry, and their helpers. Moments later, Neal\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s had people lined up out the door, as farmers and market shoppers ordered from Matt and called out to Sheila, the former Carrboro Farmers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Market manager, making sandwiches with the crew. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153They\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve been coming back,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Sheila said this week of the farmers who come over hungry after Wednesday and Saturday markets. They buy from her, but she also buys from them, creating daily sides and special sandwiches from ingredients she knows were grown or produced nearby, like the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Cheesy,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d made with Hickory Grove cheese, or the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Frenchy,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d made with Carolina Moon, both cheeses from Chapel Hill Creamery. The Italian deli meats come from Giacomo\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s in Greensboro and the oh-so-good bread comes from Guglhupf Bakery in Durham. <\/p>\n<p>Matt grew up here and considers Carrboro home and where he wanted to own a business.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We looked at a bunch of places,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We held out for a place in Carrboro.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Chandra Noyes, who works with the couple, has heard how happy people are that they opened where they did. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153People say a lot that they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re glad we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re here,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Noyes said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m glad to be here too. I met Matt when I was a<br \/>\nlittle kid,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d when Matt worked at Margaret\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Cantina, which her father co-owned. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I just moved back to town and saw Matt out here on the street one day trying to get the place ready.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Matt offered her a job. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m excited to be part of a new great business.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s really exciting to be part of the Carrboro business community,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Sheila said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153This is a bustling little area.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a busy intersection, and Open Eye got people in the habit of hanging out,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Matt said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve been walking around this block my whole life wanting to do something like this.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Popular opinion and brown bags about town would suggest that he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s doing it right.<\/p>\n<p><em>Contact Valarie Schwartz at 923-3746 or valariekays@mac.com<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Valarie Schwartz There have been recent reports of Carrboro pedestrians walking around in the vicinity of South Greensboro and Main streets covetously carrying brown paper bags.
