Thanks to the youths who submitted their poems for the poetry contest. The poems revealed the depth of human spirit, a longing for joy and so much angst at the state of our world and inner landscapes. Despite being youths, their creativity expressed common issues that affect all of humanity. Most of us long for days filled with wonder, love, joy and peace. It’s all there available for us to experience at any moment; why should we not have it all? We have become so busy with the “doing” that we forget to pay attention to just “being.” We tend to fill our spare time tying to fill the void with TV, movies, books, drugs, sex, alcohol, etc. There is such a seeking afoot in society and there are so many teachers, books and DVDs available to aim us towards the lives we desire.

My favorite teacher, Prem Rawat (WOPG.org) shares a simple practice called “Knowledge,” encouraging us to spend some time each day in silence. This practice quiets the mind and allows us to see and feel the world with the “eyes of the heart.” It works! A favorite affirmation/prayer from an extremely peculiar little book Handbook For The New Paradigm is, “I am a human becoming, help me to become.” Our lives are our great journey, a huge adventure. As Francine, a bicycling tour guide shared, “we’ll weather the weather, no matter the weather, whether we like it or not.” So, with these things in mind let us all set sail with peace and joy in our hearts and our eyes on the horizon.
