
{"id":26153,"date":"2012-05-31T09:52:37","date_gmt":"2012-05-31T13:52:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carrborocitizen.com\/main\/?p=26153"},"modified":"2012-05-31T09:54:15","modified_gmt":"2012-05-31T13:54:15","slug":"scroggs-shooting-leaves-one-dead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/2012\/05\/31\/scroggs-shooting-leaves-one-dead\/","title":{"rendered":"Scroggs shooting leaves one dead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Rose Laudicina<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Staff Writer<\/em> <\/p>\n<p>The start to a long holiday weekend took a scary turn for students, teachers and parents at Mary Scroggs Elementary School last Friday as gunshots were fired outside the school just minutes before dismissal.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.carrborocitizen.com\/main\/2012\/05\/31\/scroggs-shooting-leaves-one-dead\/scroggsmurder-ali-cherfaoui\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-26155\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.carrborocitizen.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/ScroggsMurder-Ali-Cherfaoui.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"ScroggsMurder-Ali Cherfaoui\" width=\"260\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-26155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/ScroggsMurder-Ali-Cherfaoui.jpg 260w, https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/ScroggsMurder-Ali-Cherfaoui-113x130.jpg 113w, https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/ScroggsMurder-Ali-Cherfaoui-97x113.jpg 97w, https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/ScroggsMurder-Ali-Cherfaoui-86x100.jpg 86w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIn what police are saying was the result of an ongoing domestic dispute, Ali Cherfaoui of N.C. 54 in Carrboro fatally shot Chahnaz Kebaier of Copperline Drive in Chapel Hill multiple times around 2 p.m. as the two were arguing outside the front doors of Scroggs. <\/p>\n<p>Tapes released by the Chapel Hill Police Department show multiple people called 911 as soon as the shots were fired at 2:04 p.m., including one Scroggs staff member and one person who allegedly witnessed Cherfaoui shoot Kebaier.<\/p>\n<p>In one of the tapes released, the distressed caller describes the scene at Scroggs right before the shooting as being very quiet, when all of a sudden gunshots were fired and a female fell to the ground. <\/p>\n<p>Moments after the shots were fired, the school went into lockdown and remained so until police apprehended Cherfaoui, who had fled the scene in a black Chevy Impala with Florida plates, and took him into custody.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I am so proud of the way the Mary Scroggs Elementary staff worked together to ensure the safety of our students,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Keri Litwak, Scroggs principal, said in a statement released on Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153They did an excellent job in carrying out lockdown procedures and dismissing students under extraordinarily difficult circumstances,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said.  <\/p>\n<p>Cherfaoui was arrested at U.S. 15-501 and Raleigh Road soon after the shooting.
