
{"id":27115,"date":"2012-07-26T10:00:25","date_gmt":"2012-07-26T14:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carrborocitizen.com\/main\/?p=27115"},"modified":"2012-07-26T10:00:25","modified_gmt":"2012-07-26T14:00:25","slug":"rena-community-center-to-close","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/2012\/07\/26\/rena-community-center-to-close\/","title":{"rendered":"RENA community center to close"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Taylor Sisk<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Staff Writer<\/em><\/p>\n<p>CHAPEL HILL \u00e2\u20ac\u201c A community center on Purefoy Drive operated by the Rogers-Eubanks Neighborhood Association (RENA) has been told it must close its doors by Aug. 11 because it never applied for proper permitting.<\/p>\n<p>Penny Rich, a member of the Chapel Hill Town Council and a committee to provide mitigation to the Rogers Road community for having lived in the midst of the county landfill for more than 40 years, said that while on a tour of the Rogers Road community it occurred to J.B. Culpepper, the town\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s planning director, that RENA had never applied for a permit to operate a community center. The house in which the center operates is in the Town of Chapel Hill\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s extraterritorial jurisdiction.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s zoned residential,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Rich said on Wednesday, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153but that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not really the problem. The problem is with the permitting.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>RENA has used the facility to provide afterschool programs, run a children\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s camp and distribute food to families in the community, among other activities. <\/p>\n<p>RENA representative Robert Campbell has indicated that the organization will not go to the expense of applying for a permit and meeting code; rather, it will focus its efforts on creating a permanent center.
