Photo courtesy UNC News Services.\" width=\"130\" height=\"194\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a><em>UNC News Services<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The National Newspaper Association (NNA) has named University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill professor Jock Lauterer its point person on community journalism for the trade association\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s nationwide membership primarily of non-daily newspapers.<\/p>\n<p>Lauterer is a lecturer in community journalism and news writing at the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication, where he directs the Carolina Community Media Project, the school\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s outreach program to 192 small North Carolina newspapers.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m delighted to be a part of the NNA,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Lauterer, whose community journalism class helped inspire the creation of The Carrboro Citizen. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I believe so strongly in the fundamental importance of great newspapers and their Web sites because they play a critical role in the promotion and maintenance of civic life and high livability in a free democratic society.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>The NNA is the nation\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s oldest and largest newspaper organization. Its mission is to protect, promote and enhance America\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s community newspapers through government relation programs, business and educational programs, and its national publication for community newspapers.<\/p>\n<p>Lauterer will specialize in community journalism newsroom issues, complementing the NNA\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s specialists in postal service, public policy and legal issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Jock has a real cache and expertise in the newsroom,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Brian Steffens, executive director of the NNA. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153He will be a great ambassador and resource for the NNA and its members.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Each summer, Lauterer conducts free, on-site journalism workshops at newspaper offices across the state. His \u00e2\u20ac\u0153community journalism roadshow\u00e2\u20ac\u009d has visited more than 120 newspapers during the last seven summers.
