
{"id":27906,"date":"2012-09-20T09:52:11","date_gmt":"2012-09-20T13:52:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carrborocitizen.com\/main\/?p=27906"},"modified":"2012-09-20T09:52:11","modified_gmt":"2012-09-20T13:52:11","slug":"carrboro-brewery-finds-a-home-downtown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/2012\/09\/20\/carrboro-brewery-finds-a-home-downtown\/","title":{"rendered":"Carrboro brewery finds a home downtown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Rose Laudicina<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Staff Writer<\/em> <\/p>\n<p>A place to see music, to go after a jog,  to catch a movie, to grab a locally brewed craft beer \u00e2\u20ac\u201c these are all things Eric Knight, hoopla czar for Steel String Brewery, said he hopes the brewery\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s newly acquired space in downtown Carrboro will become. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s what I am really excited about \u00e2\u20ac\u201c to have the taproom be kind of a community center, so when people get off work there is a place for the locals to come over and have a beer,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Knight said. <\/p>\n<p>While eventually the brewery\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s new home at 106 S. Greensboro St., next to Glasshalfull, will also serve as a space for Will Isley, Steel String\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s brewing czar, to craft Steel String\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s own beer, it will open first as a taproom where people can come to enjoy a variety of North Carolina beers. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We want it to be a cultural hub for Carrboro,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Isley said. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I think craft breweries always bring people out, and even before we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re brewing we just wanted a gathering place for the community,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he added.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast with bars where people go just to grab a drink, Knight said he hopes to have some sort of event or activity going on at the bar every night, so, as he puts it, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t just be open \u00e2\u20ac\u201c something will always be going on.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/p>\n<p>Steel String started leasing the building in August, and although they are still in the permitting process, with hopes to start construction in the next couple of weeks, Isley and Knight said they anticipate having the taproom open by early November. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s been an awesome and huge learning experience for us,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Knight said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We have definitely gotten a lesson in regulations and how slow things can be in this part of the process.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>However, while they wait for permission to begin construction, the guys of Steel String \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Isley and Knight along with Cody Maltais, financial czar, and Andrew Scharfenberg, logistics czar \u00e2\u20ac\u201c are staying busy brewing beer at Isley\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s house, dreaming up ideas for the taproom and connecting with other local businesses to form collaborations. <\/p>\n<p>Isley noted their proximity to Open Eye Caf\u00c3\u00a9 and Carrboro Coffee Roasters, right across the street from Steel String, and said they have already begun talking with the owner to create a beer using their coffee. <\/p>\n<p>And although taproom patrons will have to wait a while to enjoy Steel String Brewery\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s beer, Isley said he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s excited that the brewery will further accentuate the local feel of the space. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Once we get our Carrboro beer in there, it becomes exponentially more meaningful.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eric Knight hopes Steel String Brewery becomes a place to see music, to go after a jog,  to catch a movie, to grab a locally brewed craft beer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-27906","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/27906","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/12"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=27906"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/27906\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":27907,"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/27906\/revisions\/27907"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=27906"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=27906"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=27906"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
