(Devotees of the Hardee’s Monster Thickburger need not apply.) The non-deep-fried Airfries were decent, as was the organic, low-fat chocolate shake. Best thing in the house was the garlic ketchup (they have four flavors of ketchup — garlic, mesquite, hot pepper and “classic.”) Overall, a bit pricey for what you get.

Irresistible
How good is the Thom Kha soup from Penang? A couple of eaters returned to their car after shopping at Timberlyne to find a smashed out window and a rifled-through purse. Checking the backseat, they noted that a camera bag was untouched and quickly realized the only thing stolen was a take-out order of Thom Kha, which the Penang menu describes as “sliced chicken cooked with lemongrass, galangal, kaffir leaves, and straw mushrooms in a mild sweet coconut broth.”

Obtaining it legally will cost you $4.95 for one serving or $10.95 for three.
penangnc.com

Ahem. You’re off-gassing
Note to charcoal grillers. You’ve got to kick that lighter-fluid habit. Really. Get a hold of yourself. Then, get a charcoal chimney. It takes two sheets of newsprint, 10 minutes of patience and you wind up with food that doesn’t taste like a refinery or require the services of a supertanker. The Eater uses the highly durable Weber model with the extra handle. They run $12-$15 and are readily available. Big Oil will hate you for it.

Wings over Carrboro
In honor of the opening of tailgate season, The Eater is seeking opinions about local wings. There are plenty of options here in the two major wing categories: Classic, which includes anything based on the butter-and-Texas Pete recipe; and Fancy, which includes teriyaki, honey mustard and the like. The Eater is fond of the consistency and cost of Armadillo Grill’s Classic wings (Full order of 10 is $5.50, half-order $3.20). As for the Fancy variety, there may be no better deal than a lunch special with Jade Palace’s spicy, sweet and (often) crunchy Bar-B-Que Chicken Wings ($5.25 Tuesday, Thursday and Friday).

So fellow eaters, what are your favorites?

A drinker too
Eating would not be complete without its fairer sister, drinking. Among the things The Eater occasionally drinks are coffee, espressos, cappuccinos, lattes (okay, maybe not lattes) and tea, all of which you can get at the West End Wine Bar starting Tuesday. The Wine Bar, now plus-coffeeshop, opens at 7:30 in the a.m. and stays open ‘til late, Monday through Saturday. They will also offer pastries and other munchies. You can get coffee until 10 p.m. and wine in the afternoon.

The Wine Bar offers free drip coffee from Tuesday to Thursday this week to celebrate its new foray. The goods are local, and the coffee is roasted by Carrboro Coffee (the folks behind Open Eye) and pasties baked by Guglhupf. Nosh.

Super Cheap Beer
Not sure what the beer dynamics are that led to this, but a 12-pack of Schlitz at the Lowes at Chatham Crossing is, like, $4.79. Anybody seen anything cheaper?

The Eater tries to keep up on the local cuiscenery.
