Scheduled stops include Asheville High School, West Charlotte High School, Terry Sanford High School and several UNC system campuses.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nOn Monday, Thorp attended Tom Herndon\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Authentic Research class, an honors-level research methodology class of nine Chapel Hill High seniors. After watching as students tested the nitrogen levels in fish tanks, Thorp sat down with students to talk with them about what they want out of the college experience and the benefits of a large research university. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We need to hear what students want,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Thorp said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Otherwise, we won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know how to create academic programs that will attract them to our university.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/p>\n<p>Student Alec Nelson told Thorp he wanted to attend a college where he would have the opportunity to learn about many different subjects, so that he could really figure out where he wanted to focus. Other students discussed study-abroad programs, psychology and biology classes and more.<\/p>\n<p>Thorp encouraged the students to try to figure out what they were truly interested in and to pursue it. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153If you study what you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re really motivated and excited and passionate about, then you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re going to do better than if you study something you think you ought to study,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Thorp said, adding that students should keep an open mind. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153When I was your age, I thought I knew what it was I wanted to do the rest of my life,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Thorp said, recalling his plans to attend medical school. <\/p>\n<p>Thorp\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s plans changed at UNC, where he had the opportunity to get involved in experiments and developed an interest in research. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153If I hadn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t gone to a place where I could have had that kind of experience, then I might not have figured that out,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Thorp wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t the only one asking the questions; students probed Thorp about what UNC looks for in students, science opportunities abroad and what motivates him as chancellor of UNC. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I think those of us who work in higher education, we believe that higher education has the ability to lift society,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Thorp said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Our institution in particular is the one that invented public higher education.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Our founders wanted us to be known all over the world for our academic programs,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s why I get up at 5:30.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3574","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3574","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/12"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=3574"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3574\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=3574"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=3574"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=3574"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
