David Price, a Chapel Hill Democrat, faced off against his Republican challenger, B.J. Lawson of Cary, at a debate Tuesday night at UNC, sponsored by the Dialectic and Philanthropic Societies.<\/p>\n<p>The debate included several sharp exchanges.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nLawson, who has emphasized a libertarian philosophy and de-emphasized his affiliation with the GOP, took Price to task for his support of the Patriot Act, calling it \u00e2\u20ac\u0153one of the most egregious crimes against our civil liberties.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Lawson also complained about the recent financial bailout as another example of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153corporate socialism run amok up in Washington.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Price did his best to tie Lawson to Republican policies, with repeated references to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153my opponents party\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and saying he was not \u00e2\u20ac\u0153running away from my national ticket.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Price defended his tenure as chair of the House appropriations sub-committee that oversees the Department of Homeland Security.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153If there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s one thing that I have been vigilant about and that I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m going to defend myself about it is watching out for people\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s civil liberties and privacy in our homeland security measures,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Price said, adding that he held up 12 bills in the last session over privacy concerns.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kirk Ross Staff Writer Fourth District U.S. Rep.
