
{"id":3767,"date":"2008-10-30T08:26:00","date_gmt":"2008-10-30T16:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carrborocitizen.com\/main\/?p=3767"},"modified":"2008-10-31T07:59:40","modified_gmt":"2008-10-31T15:59:40","slug":"early-voting-in-state-county-tops-2004-totals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/2008\/10\/30\/early-voting-in-state-county-tops-2004-totals\/","title":{"rendered":"Early voting in state, county tops 2004 totals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>by Kirk Ross<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As predicted, a surge of early voting has topped totals reached in 2004.<br \/>\nWith early voting set to end on Saturday at <del datetime=\"2008-10-30T18:48:29+00:00\">1<\/del> 5 p.m., 35,154 residents have cast their ballots at the five early voting in Orange County as of the close of business on Tuesday.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nThat compares to 30,245 who cast their ballots during the early voting period in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>Lines remained long at the early voting sites including a new site in northern Orange County where voting had lagged last week. As of Tuesday 12,627 had cast their ballots at the Morehead Planetarium site; 7,821 at Carrboro Town Hall; 7,671 at the Orange County Public Library in Hillsborough; 5,962 at the Seymour Senior Center and 1,073 at the Northern Human Services Center.<\/p>\n<p>Statewide, more than 1.6 million people have cast their ballots early with 54 percent of them Democrats, 29 percent Republican and 17 percent registered as unaffiliated.<\/p>\n<p>North Carolina and its 15 electoral votes is considered a battleground state this year and both presidential candidates and their running mates have been in the state this week.<\/p>\n<p>Democrat Barack Obama spoke at a rally in Raleigh on Wednesday ahead of his nationally televised 30 minute closing argument on Wednesday evening. <\/p>\n<p>Republican John McCain was in Fayetteville on Tuesday calling for support from military families in his effort.<\/p>\n<p>Libertarian Bob Barr was also in the state this week campaigning on campus at Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill.<\/p>\n<p>Once the early voting period ends, polls will shut down for two days as election workers ready machines and ballots for Election Day.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the presidential contest, there are 22 contested races on the ballot this year. Polls open Tuesday, Nov. 4 at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Contested races on the ballot include:<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 U.S. Senate \u00e2\u20ac\u201d GOP incumbent Elizabeth Dole is being challenged by Democrat Kay Hagan and Libertarian Christopher Cole;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 U.S. Congress \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Democratic incumbent David Price is being challenged by Republican B. J. Lawson;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Governor \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Democratic Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue, Republican Mayor of Charlotte Pat McCrory and Libertarian Mike Munger are all vying to replace outgoing Democrtic Governor Mike Easley;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Lt. Governor \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Republican Robert Pittinger, Democrat Walter Dalton \u00e2\u20ac\u201d both of whom are state senators \u00e2\u20ac\u201d and Libertarian Phillip Rhodes are in the running; <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Attorney General \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Incumbent Democrat Roy Cooper is being challenged by Bob Crumley;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 State Auditor \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Incumbent Republican Les Merritt is being challenged by Democrat Beth Wood;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Agriculture Commissioner \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Incumbent Republican Steve Troxler is facing Democrat Ronnie Ansley;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Insurance Commissioner \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Democrat Wayne Goodwin, Repubican John Odom and Libertarian Mark McMains are vying for an open seat;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Labor Commissioner \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Incumbent Republican Cherie Berry is being challenged by Democrat Mary Fant Donnan;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Secretary of State \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Incombent Elaine Marshall is facing Republican Jack Sawyer;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Public Instruction \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Incombent Democratic Superintendent June Atkinson is facing Republican Richard Morgan;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Treasurer \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Democrat Janet Cowell and Republican Bill Daughtridge are vying for an open seat;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 State Senate District 23 \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Incombent Democrat Ellie Kinnaird is facing Republican challenger Greg Bass; and<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2  County Commisioner At-Large \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Democrat Bernadette Pelissier and Republican Kevin Wolff are vying for the newly created at-large seat.<\/p>\n<p>Candidates in non-partisan judicial races include:<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Associate Justice, Supreme Court \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Bob Edmonds, Jr. and Suzanne Reyolds;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Court of Appeals \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Jewel Ann Farlow and Jim Wynn;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Court of Appeals \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Sam J.
