She holds a bachelor\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s degree in elementary education and psychology from UNC and is pursuing a master\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s of education in mathematics education.<br \/>\nA member of Scroggs Elementary\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s leadership committee and faculty council, Pyon also serves as third-grade chair and lead teacher. In addition, Pyon is Scroggs Elementary\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s professional learning communities leader and equity team leader.<br \/>\nPyon received the Horace Mann Educator Scholarship in 2006 and received the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Scholarship at UNC. She will represent the district as Teacher of the Year at the regional competition.<br \/>\nEast Chapel Hill High School teacher Kathleen Laufer and Rashkis Elementary School teacher Christina Royster were named honor teachers.<br \/>\nSeawell Elementary School Assistant Principal Marny Ruben was named Assistant Principal of the Year.<!--more--><br \/>\nTeaching Chairs were also named. These include:<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Greg Cain, Smith Middle \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Elmo\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Award for Excellence in Teaching Foreign Service or ESL;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Katherine Andrews, McDougle Elementary \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Upper Elementary Chair for Excellence in Teaching Innovation;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Patty Berge, McDougle Middle \u00e2\u20ac\u201c GlaxoSmithKline Chair for Excellence in Teaching Middle School Science;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Rebecca Hite, Chapel Hill High \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Burton Stuart Chair for Promising New High School Teacher in Math or Science; and<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Anna Collins, Rashkis Elementary \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Dean Smith New Teacher Award.<br \/>\nTeachers who received additional awards include:<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Rita Simpson, McDougle Middle, Smith Middle and Chapel Hill High \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Valeria Daniels-Paddock Award;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Alice Bryan, McDougle Middle \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Katherine Penn Resource Teacher Award; and<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Kim Fearrington, Carrboro Elementary \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Wilson and Edwin Caldwell Jr. Minority Student Achievement Award.<br \/>\nThe district also honored 34 retirees and 21 teachers who earned their National Board Certifications this year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scroggs Elementary School teacher Shirley Pyon was named Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Teacher of the Year for 2007-08 at the district\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s annual recognition banquet on May 31.
