
{"id":4022,"date":"2008-11-20T11:24:18","date_gmt":"2008-11-20T19:24:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carrborocitizen.com\/main\/?p=4022"},"modified":"2008-11-20T11:24:18","modified_gmt":"2008-11-20T19:24:18","slug":"tragedy-hits-chapel-hill-high-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/2008\/11\/20\/tragedy-hits-chapel-hill-high-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Tragedy hits Chapel Hill High again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Susan Dickson<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Staff Writer<\/em><\/p>\n<p> CHAPEL HILL  \u00e2\u20ac\u201dThe Chapel Hill High School community is mourning the loss of yet another student after the tragic death of senior Rodney Torain early Sunday morning. <\/p>\n<p>Torain, 18, was killed in an automobile crash on Old Greensboro Highway just before 4 a.m. Sunday.<br \/>\nAshley Bynum, 18, was driving Torain home with Laticia Farrington, 17, when a gold or silver small car began closely following their car, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol. The car then began to pass Bynum\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s vehicle, striking the car on the left and causing it to run off the road to the right then veer back onto the road and off the left side, striking a tree. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The car that struck Bynum\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s vehicle then sped away from the scene. <\/p>\n<p>Trooper T.S. Wright said Torain was pronounced dead at the scene and Bynum and Farrington were brought to UNC Hospitals with non life-threatening injuries. They were later released. <\/p>\n<p>According to Wright, the witnesses said at least two Hispanic males were in the car \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a small, gold or silver four-door car \u00e2\u20ac\u201c which should have sideswipe marks on the right side. <\/p>\n<p>Torain is the second Chapel Hill High School football player to die this year. Atlas Fraley, also a senior and a friend of Torain, died Aug. 12 in his home following two football scrimmages. Although paramedics responded to a 911 call from Fraley and then treated him that day, the cause of his death has not been released.<\/p>\n<p>Torain, like Fraley, was very involved in school and athletics and was well liked by his peers.<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153He had a very positive presence in the school,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Chapel Hill High Principal Jackie Ellis said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153He was an amazing young man.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/p>\n<p>Ellis said students seemed to be in shock following Torain\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s untimely death.<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s been quiet,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Of course, there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a lot of sadness&#8230;. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s just been trying.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>A crisis team was brought into the school Monday morning and counselors were made available to students and staff members. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153It has hit across races, across socioeconomics,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Ellis said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s just sorely missed, and it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s evident in our school.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/p>\n<p>A group on the social networking website Facebook was dedicated to Torain and has drawn more than 150 members. One of the postings on the site states, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153All you ever did was make people laugh, and it was that warmth that everyone will remember.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/p>\n<p>Tuesday night\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Chapel Hill High men\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s varsity basketball game was canceled following the tragedy.
