New school board member Gregory McElveen\" title=\"mcgreenvellee\" width=\"120\" height=\"180\" align=\"left\" size-medium wp-image-4072\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/mcgreenvellee-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/mcgreenvellee.jpg 857w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 120px) 100vw, 120px\" \/><\/a><strong>Susan Dickson<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Staff Writer<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education voted unanimously last week to appoint Gregory McElveen as the newest member of the board. <\/p>\n<p>The board selected McElveen from a pool of seven applicants to fill the seat left by Pam Hemminger, who submitted her resignation in order to serve on the Orange County Board of Commissioners.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nMcElveen, 52, has lived in Chapel Hill for 14 years and works in corporate market research at IBM. He has six children, two that attend East Chapel Hill High School and four that have graduated from Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools. <\/p>\n<p>He has been involved with local education for a number of years, through his work as chair of the Minority Student Achievement and Support Committee at Chapel Hill High School and on the district\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Strategic Plan. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I really do think that K-12 education is really important and vital to the success of our community,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d McElveen said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m really interested and committed to the success of our youth.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>McElveen said he looks forward to working toward implementing the board\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s articulated priorities, including closing the achievement gap; maintaining excellence for all students; and ensuring a safe, responsive and inviting climate for students, teachers and parents. <\/p>\n<p>He hopes to help the board refine policies to increase its effectiveness. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The biggest challenge is going to be meeting all of the wants and needs of our district and the requests of our students and parents within this difficult financial environment,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want to let anything slip.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We certainly don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want to begin pitting various members of the community against each other.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<br \/>\nMcElveen\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s term will expire next fall, when three seats on the board will become available.
