
{"id":495,"date":"2007-06-28T07:43:01","date_gmt":"2007-06-28T15:43:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carrborocitizen.com\/main\/2007\/06\/28\/board-studies-middle-school-redistricting\/"},"modified":"2007-06-28T07:43:01","modified_gmt":"2007-06-28T15:43:01","slug":"board-studies-middle-school-redistricting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/2007\/06\/28\/board-studies-middle-school-redistricting\/","title":{"rendered":"Board studies middle school redistricting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>By Susan Dickson<\/strong><br \/>\nStaff Writer<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Board of Education last week considered proposed middle school redistricting that could move more than 200 students to different middle schools.<\/p>\n<p>School officials are redistricting in order to prevent \u00e2\u20ac\u0153orphan\u00e2\u20ac\u009d segments \u00e2\u20ac\u201c small segments of students who are assigned to different middle schools than the rest of their elementary school classmates \u00e2\u20ac\u201c that were created during redistricting for the new elementary school that will open in the fall of 2008.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>School board members said they wanted to advertise the proposed changes for a longer period of time before making a decision. School officials sent a letter to families of students that would be affected by the proposed changes about a week and a half before the board\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Board member Liz Carter expressed concern that many families that could be affected by the changes did not know that the board was considering middle school redistricting.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Basically, we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re still tweaking with redistricting, and we said to families [in May] that we were finished,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Carter said, noting that no parents came to the meeting to speak about the proposed changes.<\/p>\n<p>Board member Mike Kelley agreed that more should be done to inform families of the proposed changes before the board makes a decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The middle of summer is really a very bad time to have discussions such as this,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Kelley said.<\/p>\n<p>Because the changes would not take effect until the 2008-09 school year, Steve Scroggs, assistant superintendent for support services, said the school board could postpone a decision regarding middle school redistricting.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We have plenty of time,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Segments proposed to be moved include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Damascus Church Road, from Jones Ferry Road to Meacham Road, Ridgewood, Springhill Forest, Wolf\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Pond and Preston Springs \u00e2\u20ac\u201c from McDougle to Culbreth;<\/li>\n<li>Royal Park Apartments \u00e2\u20ac\u201c from Culbreth to McDougle;<\/li>\n<li>Foxcroft Apartments \u00e2\u20ac\u201c from Culbreth to Phillips;<\/li>\n<li>Old Well Apartments \u00e2\u20ac\u201c from McDougle to Culbreth;<\/li>\n<li>South Greensboro Street from Main Street to Rocky Brook Mobile Home Park, Old Pittsboro Road and Roberson Place, Maple Avenue \u00e2\u20ac\u201c from Culbreth to McDougle; and<\/li>\n<li>Prince Street\/Barnes Street area \u00e2\u20ac\u201c from Culbreth to McDougle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Susan Dickson Staff Writer The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Board of Education last week considered proposed middle school redistricting that could move more than 200 students to different middle schools.
