They\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re calling the promotion \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Drive Carrboro.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>CASA spokesperson Shirley U. Guest explains the promotion, saying \u00e2\u20ac\u0153In these tough economic conditions, getting folks quickly and easily from their homes to shops becomes very important. While we think walking and biking are good for you, they just don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t do as much to stimulate the local economy as the good old auto.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<br \/>\nGuest added, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re going to propose that the town raise speed limits in residential areas and eliminate most speed tables. These things just don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t work anyway.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>When asked about the increased pollution likely to be caused by more automobile use, Guest said, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153CASA feels strongly that there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s already so much hot air in Carrboro that no one\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s going to notice a little more.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<br \/>\nOther advocacy items looming large in CASA\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s windscreen are the elimination of crosswalks and the four-laning of Greensboro Street\/Hillsborough Road. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153All we have to do is eliminate the bike lanes, and widening those streets becomes very feasible,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Guess said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Then we could raise the speed limit to 45 or 50 and we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d really be rolling.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Guest points skeptics to Cary as a town that really honors the automobile and its important place in our economy. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The faster Mom can get the kids to soccer practice, the more time she\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s got to spend shopping,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Guest said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Cary,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she added, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153gets it.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<br \/>\nSo you might want to take an extra look before you step off that curb.
