
{"id":5776,"date":"2009-05-07T09:45:42","date_gmt":"2009-05-07T17:45:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carrborocitizen.com\/main\/?p=5776"},"modified":"2009-05-07T09:45:42","modified_gmt":"2009-05-07T17:45:42","slug":"chatham-liquor-law-approved","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/2009\/05\/07\/chatham-liquor-law-approved\/","title":{"rendered":"Chatham liquor law approved"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Kirk Ross<br \/>\nStaff Writer<\/p>\n<p>Chatham County voters overwhelmingly approved a referendum that would allow mixed-drink sales in the county, a move that supporters say will boost the local economy.<\/p>\n<p>Unofficial results show that 5,073, or 65 percent, of those who went to the polls voted \u00e2\u20ac\u0153yes,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d while 2,710, or 35 percent, voted \u00e2\u20ac\u0153no.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A little less than 19 percent of the county\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s registered voters turned out for the special election.<\/p>\n<p>Jeffrey Starkweather, who along with Pittsboro Mayor Randy Voller helped lead the effort to pass the referendum, said he was delighted by the results.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I think it means people really want to move Chatham forward in terms of economic development,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Starkweather said.<\/p>\n<p>The outcome of the referendum, he said, is the likelihood that Pittsboro will be able to attract more restaurants, which in turn will lead to more retail coming to the area as well.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Cote, co-owner and general manager at City Tap, said it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s likely City Tap will soon apply for a mixed-drink permit. He credits Voller for firing up those interested in seeing the referendum pass.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The mayor did a fantastic job,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Cote said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153He went above and beyond.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<br \/>\nCote said that since he moved to Pittsboro in 1994, it always struck him as unfair that places like the Siler City County Club and the Governors Club could serve mixed drinks but others could not.<\/p>\n<p>The result of the referendum makes the playing field a little fairer, he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153This opens up all these possibilities for Pittsboro.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Starkweather said one downside of the election results was that they show that the county is still deeply divided between east and west.
