
{"id":6493,"date":"2009-07-23T06:16:21","date_gmt":"2009-07-23T14:16:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carrborocitizen.com\/main\/?p=6493"},"modified":"2009-07-23T06:16:21","modified_gmt":"2009-07-23T14:16:21","slug":"center-is-needed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/2009\/07\/23\/center-is-needed\/","title":{"rendered":"Center is needed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thank you\u00c2\u00a0for reporting the county\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s plans to\u00c2\u00a0cut hours at\u00c2\u00a0solid waste convenience centers \u00e2\u20ac\u201d a burden shared by all the rural residents.\u00c2\u00a0Surprisingly, after your reports\u00c2\u00a0quoted our\u00c2\u00a0commissioners expressing their concern\u00c2\u00a0for the rural community, they decided to close the Bradshaw Quarry Solid Waste Convenience Center. This is a blow to many rural residents who do not have trash pickup and will now have to regularly\u00c2\u00a0haul their\u00c2\u00a0household\u00c2\u00a0trash 10-15 miles away.\u00c2\u00a0<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nCutting costs by shifting the burden to unsuspecting\u00c2\u00a0rural residents\u00c2\u00a0doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t make sense. Concerned residents and\u00c2\u00a0the local fire\u00c2\u00a0department\u00c2\u00a0have written to the board asking them to reconsider. So far, the commissioner\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s\u00c2\u00a0responses have been flat, with little interest in\u00c2\u00a0considering alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>Residents have suggested reducing the hours of the convenience centers to allow Bradshaw Quarry to remain open two or three days a week. In addition,\u00c2\u00a0we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve asked the county to\u00c2\u00a0discontinue curbside recycling pickup in the rural county \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153fluff\u00e2\u20ac\u009d service\u00c2\u00a0that was added about four years ago.\u00c2\u00a0Recently\u00c2\u00a0added services for large appliances. furniture, mattresses and electricals\u00c2\u00a0are unnecessary\u00c2\u00a0and residents\u00c2\u00a0are\u00c2\u00a0willing to haul those large items\u00c2\u00a0on those rare occasions that disposal is needed. <\/p>\n<p>The Bradshaw Quarry Convenience Center is needed in our community and eliminating\u00c2\u00a0it places a large and\u00c2\u00a0disproportionate burden on\u00c2\u00a0a rural community, who\u00c2\u00a0are being asked\u00c2\u00a0to regularly drive\u00c2\u00a0long distances to dispose of their household trash. Hours and services can be reduced to save money,\u00c2\u00a0but eliminating\u00c2\u00a0household trash\u00c2\u00a0drop-off\u00c2\u00a0will impact our health and safety.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lately, our community has felt constantly threatened by the insensitivity\u00c2\u00a0and disinterest of our local officials. It is not difficult to find creative and effective ways to reduce the costs of handling solid waste for the rural county.
