East Chapel Hill\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s varsity teams did not compete because coach Steve Marquis said he wanted to rest his varsity runners. He chose to use his JV runners instead.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The meet took place on a breezy afternoon. From the starting gun to finish, CHHS maintained a solid lead. <\/p>\n<p>Chapel Hill junior Will Bunch nabbed first place by a 1.1 second margin, with a 5K time of 16 minutes, 20.9 seconds. Bunch\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s teammates mirrored his impressive performance, as seven out of the top eight finishers were Tiger runners. <\/p>\n<p>Even so, Chapel Hill\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s excellent showing failed to completely measure up to coach Ron Olsen\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s high expectations. When asked how he felt about his boy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s team\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s success, Olsen said, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153They weren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t successful. They let someone break up their top five.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, Olsen said he is happy with the level at which his boy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s team is performing, although he hopes to get 10-15 seconds faster per runner by the end of the season.<\/p>\n<p> The Tigers are racing at the 3-A level this season, but the competitiveness hasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t subsided.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We still run the same schedule,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Olsen said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a new conference, but about as competitive as PAC-6.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Chapel Hill High won the varsity girls\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 race by a similar margin, but Carrboro High\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Grace Morken finished first, with a time of 19 minutes, 8 seconds. Chapel Hill\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Tristan Van Ord finished second, in 19 minutes, 12 seconds. Both runners are freshmen.<\/p>\n<p>Carrboro women\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s coach Sarah Hallenbeck describes Morken as \u00e2\u20ac\u0153very tough and very mature.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153She\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s good at planning a race and racing a plan,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Hallenbeck said.<br \/>\nHallenbeck is excited about Morken\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s potential.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153One of the most exciting things about her running is that she\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s got room to grow,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Hallenbeck said. <\/p>\n<p>Morken hopes that her success as a younger runner will both encourage older runners and give incoming freshman confidence.<br \/>\nMorken and Van Ord share an athletic history together, having been teammates on the Triangle United soccer team.
