
{"id":7642,"date":"2009-10-22T23:59:40","date_gmt":"2009-10-23T07:59:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carrborocitizen.com\/main\/?p=7642"},"modified":"2009-10-22T23:59:40","modified_gmt":"2009-10-23T07:59:40","slug":"endorsement-letter-progressive-leader","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/2009\/10\/22\/endorsement-letter-progressive-leader\/","title":{"rendered":"Endorsement Letter: Progressive leader"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The progressive leadership that has been reflected in the office of mayor of Chapel Hill, at least since the groundbreaking election of Howard Lee in the late \u00e2\u20ac\u02dc60s, will continue<!--more--> if those of us who have truly been a part of this wonderful community, and who understand what a special place it is in this state and nation, will get together and elect Mark Kleinschmidt to be our new mayor.<\/p>\n<p>As a loyal resident for more than 50 years, a practicing lawyer, former member of the town council and solicitor of the Chapel Hill Recorder\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Court, I believe that the uniqueness of this Southern part of heaven could be easily diminished in a negative way if we fail to maintain reasonable development restrictions and focus only on commercial growth. Instead, we should continue to strive to avoid becoming just another sterile medium-sized city with a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153chamber of commerce mentality.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>The critical issue is not whether one is pro or anti \u00e2\u20ac\u0153business,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d but rather whether the town of Chapel Hill can and will remain the charming, beautiful, liberal-minded and diverse community that we love.
