
{"id":8164,"date":"2009-11-25T20:20:42","date_gmt":"2009-11-26T04:20:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carrborocitizen.com\/main\/?p=8164"},"modified":"2009-11-25T20:20:42","modified_gmt":"2009-11-26T04:20:42","slug":"new-business-group-launches-buy-local-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/2009\/11\/25\/new-business-group-launches-buy-local-week\/","title":{"rendered":"New business group launches Buy Local Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By ALISON SHAY<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Courtesy of the Carrboro Commons<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nJust in time for the holiday shopping season, a new organization will launch an effort to help build the business community and encourage Carrboro\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s residents to shop locally.<\/p>\n<p>Buy Local Week, Dec. 5-12, will mark the first project by Carrboro\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s LocalMotive.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The goal of [Buy Local Week] is to encourage the community to at least consider doing their shopping in Carrboro,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Jenny McMillan says, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153to realize that ultimately it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s for their good as well.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>McMillan plans to use her store, Nested, a home and gift gallery, to highlight items made by local people. McMillan says another goal of LocalMotive is to give business owners and community members the opportunity to get to know each other face-to-face.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We really want to create a support network for businesses,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Maher, owner of Wootini, says it will be helpful for members of the business community to have a place to discuss issues. Although the members all have different voices and may think independently, LocalMotive will allow them to work together, and Maher believes people will see the value in that.<\/p>\n<p>Terri Turner, the business manager of Weaver Street Realty, says she will act as an ambassador during Buy Local Week, visiting business owners to tell them about the group and get them involved. Turner, who \u00e2\u20ac\u0153came here as a student and didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t leave,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d says Carrboro has a real sense of community.<\/p>\n<p>This sentiment is echoed by Brian Russell, owner of Carrboro Creative Coworking. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153All I have to do is walk down the street and meet all these people, and I feel so much more connected,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Russell says. <\/p>\n<p>Russell\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s business provides space and a community environment in which local people can work.<\/p>\n<p>Russell, an active member of LocalMotive, is interested in developing strategies for communication (especially web-based), both between members of the business community and between businesses and other community members.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I think it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s really important that everybody works together, no matter what group they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re part of,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Russell says. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We need to be really helping each other as much as we can.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>McMillan says that research suggests that local businesses present a smaller tax burden to their towns, have a greater rate of giving to local causes and have more stable employee bases.<\/p>\n<p>Other communities have created similar groups, and LocalMotive will be able to use those as models and adapt them to fit Carrboro\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s needs. McMillan, and LocalMotive, want more people to get involved. No business is too small to play a role.<\/p>\n<p>Although Turner doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t own a business, she wants to make sure Carrboro\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s businesses are successful. She hopes LocalMotive will educate residents that they don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have to shop out of town to find the goods or services they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re looking for, and believes the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153foundation, energy and juice\u00e2\u20ac\u009d is here for LocalMotive to be successful.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153If you buy locally, you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re giving back to yourself because you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re helping your community,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d McMillan says. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s like investing in yourself.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>The group is already discussing plans for the coming year.
