
{"id":8242,"date":"2009-12-03T10:09:42","date_gmt":"2009-12-03T18:09:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carrborocitizen.com\/main\/?p=8242"},"modified":"2009-12-03T10:09:42","modified_gmt":"2009-12-03T18:09:42","slug":"aldermen-discuss-2035-transit-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/2009\/12\/03\/aldermen-discuss-2035-transit-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"Aldermen discuss 2035 transit plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Beth Mechum, Staff Writer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most of last week\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Carrboro Board of Aldermen meeting was spent discussing the Chapel Hill and Carrboro 2035 Long Range Transit Plan.<\/p>\n<p>The objectives behind the plan are an introduction of transit services that better serve the most populated bus routes and the enhancement of local bus service by eventually adding new bus routes for future needs.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Several speakers addressed light rail and local architect Giles Blunden spoke of the economic impact of the current transportation plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153A real alternative to buses and cars is going to be really important,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Blunden said, referring to global warming. <\/p>\n<p>After the comments, Mayor Mark Chilton responded by saying the discussion wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t about the creation of light rail right now, but about figuring out Carrboro\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s transportation needs for the future.<\/p>\n<p>Alderman Dan Coleman said that while he supported the idea of light rail in the future, he had a lot of questions as to where the money for it would come from.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153This is a transit plan, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not a stop-global-warming plan or a sustainability plan,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Coleman said. He added that he did not sense that taxpayers are interested in paying for light rail.<\/p>\n<p>The board officially received public comments and referred them to town staff for review. Alderman Randee Haven-O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Donnell proposed scheduleing some time in the future to discuss the possibility of light rail.<\/p>\n<p>Also at the meeting, the board heard comments about PACE Academy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s proposed addition of elementary and secondary schools in the B-4 Zoning District. The board approved the draft ordinance.<\/p>\n<p>In other action:<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 a resolution supporting Buy Carrboro Week 2009 was passed;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 the board made the town\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s notice requirements concerning the land-use ordinance consistent with the general statues;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 and a public hearing on a land-use ordinance text amendment modifying the income limit for affordable units was opened and continued to Feb. 23.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Beth Mechum, Staff Writer Most of last week\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Carrboro Board of Aldermen meeting was spent discussing the Chapel Hill and Carrboro 2035 Long Range Transit Plan.
