This week\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s tips come from Richard Quinn of Fifth Season in Carrboro.)<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tip 1: Find a way to collect rainwater. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Even though it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not raining right now, it will eventually.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Rain barrels are a good way to collect and use rainwater to preserve water, and because rainwater is free of metals found in tapwater, it is healthier for plants.<\/li>\n<li>Tip 2: Set up a drip irrigation system. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not that expensive, it can be done with basic tubing.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d By stretching the watering over a longer period of time and in smaller quantities, plants absorb more water and less is wasted.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <!--more--><\/li>\n<li>Tip 3: Let soil drain, but not too fast. Putting organic material like fertilizer, manure or compost around the roots of a plant will hold in water while still allowing some to drain.<\/li>\n<li>Tip 4: Plant perennials in the Fall. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Planting perennials in the Fall establishes the roots for the Spring.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d And with stronger roots, plants will grow stronger and fuller than if they were planted later.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Recommended plants <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Black-Eyed Susan is a drought-resistant flower that will grow well.<\/li>\n<li>The Fall Aster will bloom in the Fall and doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t need too much water, either.<\/li>\n<li>Next week: Meg Sorrell of Niche Gardens and Mike Dickinson of Dickinson\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Garden Center.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(Editor\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s note:\u00c2\u00a0 During fall gardening season we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll be providing tips from the experts.
