
{"id":9100,"date":"2010-02-18T11:39:42","date_gmt":"2010-02-18T19:39:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carrborocitizen.com\/main\/?p=9100"},"modified":"2010-03-18T09:58:32","modified_gmt":"2010-03-18T17:58:32","slug":"board-gets-an-earful-over-crosswalk-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/2010\/02\/18\/board-gets-an-earful-over-crosswalk-safety\/","title":{"rendered":"Board gets an earful over crosswalk safety"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Kirk Ross<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>Staff Writer<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Carrboro  \u00e2\u20ac\u201d  Anyone who uses the various crosswalks in downtown Carrboro knows that not all intersections are created equal in the eyes of local motorists.<\/p>\n<p>Pedestrians in the mid-block walkways near Weaver Street Market and on North Greensboro near the Century Center see a little more respect than those trying to use the crosswalks just a stone\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s throw away.<\/p>\n<p>The uncertainty of whether cars will stop and the ongoing battle of the right-of-way at major intersections were among the concerns raised at Tuesday night\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s board of aldermen meeting at Carrboro Town Hall.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Carrboro resident Tom Henry said he and fellow pedestrians he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s talked to have had numerous close calls and he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d like to see the town step up enforcement to see that crosswalks and those traveling on foot downtown get a little more respect.<\/p>\n<p>Henry said the crosswalks with the caution paddles in the center of the roadway and crossings that have walk signals tend to be safer. He singled out the crosswalks on Greensboro Street as particularly unsafe.<\/p>\n<p>Henry suggested the town try to work with the state Department of Transportation to outfit more crosswalks with paddles and encourage Carrboro police to ramp up enforcement on speeders and drivers who violate the crosswalk laws.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia Guidry said she would also like to see stronger enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153It does seem to be a contradiction to me that Carrboro promotes itself as pedestrian friendly and yet the crosswalk laws are not enforced,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said.<br \/>\nGuidry agreed with Henry on the problems with the Greensboro Street crosswalks. She said that at the crosswalk at Shelton Street and Greensboro Street on a busy Saturday there are often angry confrontations between drivers and those trying to cross the street.<\/p>\n<p>North Carolina law requires motorists to stop when pedestrians are in a crosswalk.<\/p>\n<p>In other action Tuesday night, the board:<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 amended the town\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s parking code to prohibit parking along an additional stretch along the south side of Roberson Street near the town\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s recently leased parking lot;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 set a public hearing for March 23 on clarifications to the town\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s land-use management ordinances related to stream buffers and natural constraints and the notification of the public on public hearings;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 set its agenda for the board\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s annual planning retreat, which has been rescheduled due to snow and ice to Sunday, Feb. 28 at noon at the OWASA Community Room.<\/p>\n<p>The agenda includes a preliminary outlook for the fiscal year 2010-11 budget and an overview and discussion of the town\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Vision 2020 plan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anyone who uses the various crosswalks in downtown Carrboro knows that not all intersections are created equal in the eyes of local motorists.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4,30],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-9100","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news","category-top-story"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9100","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/12"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=9100"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9100\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":9332,"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9100\/revisions\/9332"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=9100"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=9100"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=9100"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
