Roads still tricky for drivers

Officials in Chapel Hill and Carrboro issued alerts this morning warning drivers to “continue to use extreme caution while driving” because there’s still black ice on some roads. To be on the safe side, drivers should slow down and allow for some extra time for braking and reaching their destinations. Don’t want to worry about it? Take the bus. All
Chapel Hill Transit routes are running on their regular schedules.

Acme closed tonight

This just in from Kevin Callaghan at Acme:

“I know. I know. People in the South can’t handle the snow. But it’s not my fault. It is true that I’m fine with solely viewing bucolic winter landscapes on the TV. Or in a magazine. Really. And that aside from snowcream and that initial sled ride, there’s not much to icy precipitation that makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. But the truth is that Acme will be closed tonight solely because we’re being practical. We know that all of you have bought cartons and cartons of milk and loads of bread and tomato soup. And we certainly don’t want that to go to waste. And what about all those Crock Pots simmering away. And those promises of pizza delivery. And, I bet, more than a few of you rented some movies… So, I don’t want you to think that I’m out building a snowman or participating in any other frivolous wintry outdoor activity. We’re just being practical – and waiting for all this chilly, white stuff to melt. By the way, $12.95 Tuesdays will be back next week.”

Where to watch Obama’s swearing in

If you’re like us, you want to be out amongst the people to watch the historic swearing in of Barack Obama at high noon on Inauguration Day. So we’ve taken a stab at listing local eateries and bars that will not only have the pomp and circumstance on the TV, but will have the sound on so we can hang on every word. Here’s what we’ve got so far. Do us all a favor and add any other places you’re aware of.

Orange County Social Club (108 E. Main St.)
Southern Rail (201-C E. Main St.)
Town Hall Grille (410 Market St.)
Tyler’s Taproom (102 E. Main St.)

Other options:

If you just like to watch, you can chow down at Carolina Brewery (460 W. Franklin St.), which will have it on the TV without the sound.
Pittsboro’s City Tap (89 Hillsboro St.) doesn’t have TVs, but will put it on the radio.
The Armadillo Grill (120 E. Main St.) will have the festivities on their TVs, but since they can’t turn down the music, they’ll try to boost the broadcast volume.
