{"id":2143,"date":"2009-11-09T08:45:56","date_gmt":"2009-11-09T16:45:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/mill\/?p=2143"},"modified":"2010-01-21T19:26:41","modified_gmt":"2010-01-22T03:26:41","slug":"advance-notice-the-week-in-concerts-119-15","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/mill\/2009\/11\/advance-notice-the-week-in-concerts-119-15\/","title":{"rendered":"Advance Notice: The Week in Concerts 11\/9-15"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Consider me your new social secretary, here to sift through the week in music so you don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have to, providing pithy commentary where absolutely necessary and rants\/raves wherever else.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mon &#8211; 11\/9<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Alela Diane \/ Marissa Nadler @ <a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/www.artscenterlive.org\/index.php?a=music&amp;b=music&amp;id=738\" target=\"_blank\">The ArtsCenter in Carrboro<\/a> &#8211; Alela Diane&#8217;s music may be California neu-folk, but it&#8217;s inspired by the oldest ilk of balladic warbling and amorous waltzing.\u00c2\u00a0 The songs are not sickly sweet, so much as old, weary, idyllic.\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daytrotter.com\/dt\/alela-diane-concert\/20030099-110635.html\" target=\"_blank\">Her dulcet tones and gentle fingerpicking<\/a> will make you want to run through fields, start muttering stanzas about &#8220;brambles&#8221; and fall in love just so you can break it off and go weep on some mountainside (or maybe that&#8217;s just me). These and other visions just $10 and as a bonus the lovely Marissa Nadler opens.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The Blakes \/ The Jackets @ <a href=\"http:\/\/local506.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Local 506<\/a> &#8211; Given The Blakes mix of Strokes-esque pop hooks with rattling garage rock, it&#8217;s a pity this brother duo hasn&#8217;t had more traction.\u00c2\u00a0 Their self-titled debut has been in my regular rotation off and on for two years, thanks to bouncy rockers like &#8220;Don&#8217;t Bother Me&#8221; and &#8220;Two Times.&#8221; Cough up the $8, it&#8217;s bound to be a good time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Blind Pilot\u00c2\u00a0 \/ The Low Anthem @ <a href=\"http:\/\/catscradle.com\/schedule.html\" target=\"_blank\">Cat\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Cradle<\/a> &#8211; I confess I don&#8217;t really care about Blind Pilot, but I do love (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.daytrotter.com\/dt\/the-low-anthem-concert\/20030707-3738057.html\" target=\"_blank\">love.<\/a>) The Low Anthem.\u00c2\u00a0 These kids went from recycle crew to wildly popular featured artists at the Newport Folk Fest all in one year thanks to the strength of 2008&#8217;s <em>Oh My God, Charlie Darwin<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 Buy it, or at least download &#8220;Charlie Darwin.&#8221; Seriously, oh my god, $10 adv \/ $12 day of the show.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Monday is hard.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wed &#8211; 11\/11<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Jackson Browne @ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dpacnc.com\/default.asp?dpac=19&amp;objId=199\">DPAC<\/a> &#8211; Hey look, it&#8217;s Jackson Browne, oh yeah and it&#8217;s $30, $40, or $55.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Chris Knight @ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lincolntheatre.com\/schedule.htm\">Lincoln Theatre<\/a> &#8211; Little known, but much respected Kentucky songwriter flaunts his roots for $14 adv \/ $17 day of the show.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Thurs &#8211; 11\/12<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lake Inferior \/ Honored Guests \/ Gift Horse @ <a href=\"http:\/\/local506.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Local 506<\/a> &#8211; Release show for a new 10&#8243; from Lake Inferior. Get into the show and pick up a copy, all for $7.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Fri &#8211; 11\/13<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Alejandro Escovedo \/ Lambchop @ <a href=\"http:\/\/dukeperformances.duke.edu\/series\/with-these-hands\/lambchop-escovedo\" target=\"_blank\">Reynolds Theatre<\/a> $28, $22, $5 for Duke Students<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Eileen Jewell \/ Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles @ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.berkeleycafe.net\/events.php\" target=\"_blank\">Berkeley Caf\u00c3\u00a9 <\/a> $10 adv \/ $12 day of the show<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Minus the Bear \/ The Temper Trap \/ Twin Tigers @ <a href=\"http:\/\/catscradle.com\/schedule.html\" target=\"_blank\">Cat\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Cradle<\/a> $18 adv \/ $20 day of the show<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The Travelin\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 McCoury\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s @ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pinecone.org\/\">Pine Cone<\/a> $21-$23 Pine Cone members; $23-$25 general public<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Fri\/Sat &#8211; 11\/13-14<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The 5th Annual Black Beard\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Lost Weekend @ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.caverntavern.com\/\">The Cave<\/a> $7 each night &#8211; Purportedly, &#8220;a filthy, primal garage rock festival of the lowest and most repugnant order,&#8221; this thrashing in Chapel Hill&#8217;s oldest tavern features (if their names are to be believed) a riotous lineup.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Friday night, Pinche Gringo and the Lonesome Chihuahuas, Satan&#8217;s Youth Ministers, The Humms, and Trashcans take the cave.\u00c2\u00a0 Thursday, Dirty Little Heaters, The Electric Cycles, Nervous Habits, Rough Hands, and Thee Crucials, round out the calamity.\u00c2\u00a0 I can&#8217;t vouch to the quality of any of these bands, but I doubt they&#8217;d want me to.\u00c2\u00a0 Just $7 each night to lose your weekend.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Sat &#8211; 11\/14<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dan Auerbach \/ Jessica Lee Mayfield \/ Justin Townes Earl @ <a href=\"http:\/\/catscradle.com\/schedule.html\" target=\"_blank\">Cat\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Cradle<\/a> &#8211; Taking a step out from under The Black Keys, Dan Auerbach comes to lambaste the Cradle with his own brand of dirty spook rock.\u00c2\u00a0 For his gritty grooves, you&#8217;ll have the pleasure of waiting through honky-tonk charmer Justin Townes Earl and indie folk maiden Jessica Lee Mayfield.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s not a bad package deal for $20.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Fin Fang Foom \/ Ben Davis and the Jetts \/ Maple Stave @\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/local506.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Local 506<\/a> &#8211; Scrappy, locals Fin Fang Foom and Ben Davies and the Jetts, are throwing a joint release party, probably so they can fight over who has the more bad ass new record.\u00c2\u00a0 We&#8217;re in for that kind of duel. $Free. Need I say more?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Sun &#8211; 11\/15<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Langhorne Slim \/ Dawes @ <a href=\"http:\/\/catscradle.com\/schedule.html\" target=\"_blank\">Cat\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Cradle<\/a> &#8211; Should you find yourself restless Sunday evening, there&#8217;s hardly a better place to wander than in earshot of\u00c2\u00a0 Langhorne Slim.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Although, a friend tells me his new record, <em>Be Set Free<\/em>, amounts to a disappointingly overwrought polishing and repackaging of his old shtick, that old shtick is pretty fertile ground.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Whatever qualms the new record may or may not warrant, it&#8217;s doubtful the live show has lost the rambunctious spirit that gave Slim and his cohort street cred in the first place.\u00c2\u00a0 Catch them setting &#8217;em up and knocking &#8217;em down again for just $13 adv \/ $15 day of the show.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Joshua Radin \/ The Watson Twins \/ The Kins @ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lincolntheatre.com\/schedule.htm\">Lincoln Theatre<\/a> &#8211; Australian pretty boy brothers, then creepy close (aka twin) harmonies, and then probably a lot of crying.
