The Commons is the work of once of the most innovative bunch of students I&#8217;ve run across in some time. Their professor, Jock Lauterer, is a longtime community journalist who grew up in Chapel Hill. He delivered newspapers for <a href=\"http:\/\/parklibrary.jomc.unc.edu\/shumaker.html\">Jim Shumaker<\/a> at the <em>Chapel Hill Weekly<\/em> when he was a kid and had the added benefit of a grandfather who was in charge of Wilson Library.<\/p>\n<p>Jock and his <a href=\"http:\/\/carrborocommons.org\/2006\/12\/04\/test\/\">students<\/a> got revved up about the idea of a newspaper for Carrboro and managed in one semester to launch something that I hope will be around for a good long while. The Commons has news and features and photos and, if they want to hear me stop yapping to &#8217;em about it, audio.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an excerpt from <a href=\"http:\/\/carrborocommons.org\/2006\/12\/04\/who-am-i-and-what-am-i-doing-here\/\">Jock&#8217;s letter to Carrboro<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As to the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153what,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <em>the<\/em> <em>Carrboro Commons<\/em> will be a bi-weekly, interactive \u00e2\u20ac\u0153e-zine\u00e2\u20ac\u009d or Web newspaper, a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153lab newspaper,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d if you will, (meaning that this news and information site is an experiential learning project and an integral part of the required classwork for JOMC 459 Community Journalism.)
